The horse in question is a Draft/Cross in a #5 Kerkheart DF He's the only one I use the 6's in, though now I may be resetting Arab show packages from time to time and will need a 6 for those.

I didn't pinch the Horse, I pinched the nail hole closed a bit. The other nails sunk in just right. I'm going to keep to the E5's in his shoe. They fit better than the CH5's

How could one mistake the pinch of the shoe and think it was a pinch or close nail by reading the above post..I thought it was pretty clear the shoe pinch..

Not to mention DF's are punched for e-heads and an E-5 is just right in a #5 may need a 6 if you reset them.

you didn't make it clear his was a draftX....and yes if using K#5DF then yes E5 would fit; they are not made for a CH6 nail head. Arab packs....yes CH6 or try Slims. Was under the impression you would shoeing normal sized feet; up to #2 for me.

Post #678, and usually when the frog is as big as her arm that's a good indication it's a pretty good sized foot.

A ch6 for an arab package maybe a little on the short side. Don't make ass umptions she may need 7's 8's 10's or 12's.

Most of the time, for an Arab show package, and Anvil Brand 7 or 8 works really well. Once we get into NSHs, we get bigger packages and they take more nail, I typically use Capewell 8's and above. If the package is going to need a 12 or bigger, I typically double nail and definitely add a band. And, most all those shoes get a tall clip too. Most of my 'light horses' get a 5ch and a lot of my field[heavy] hunters get a 6sb.

These are light packages,( toe weight shoe and leather, sometimes a wedge as well)

The farrier setting them up used a SB6, I was asked to work with him by the owner so I could put any lost packages back on since this guy comes 4 hrs one way. I was more than happy to work with another farrier to learn, then the owner had me trim 5 of the broodmares while I was there. :D

Kim, buy some ch7 & rh 7 for those resets. The 7s come in handy if you have to reuse any old nail holes when replacing a lost package.

I really disagree on what you are saying about nail selection. Are you shoeing mostly TB? In this part of the country right now slim blades nails are a waist of time.

    Michael,

with respect to your comment, would you take the time to explain a little bout the conditions in your area now and what and why that you are using the nail that you are using?

    Thanks in advance

I don't have the talent to turn out a shoe like that, Chris.
Axe, rock or Blurton, mine always come out like crap.
    I'll come over though.
