Would you use an equipak on a race horse? Or do you think they loose grip when galloping and can cause problems?

A club footed 2 year old I went to look at last nite for a friend of my boss, would be grade 3 club on O.F , in training, sound as any race horse is out here,(they like to gallop) but sole prolapsing. There were a few like that on our racing yard and a sole pak helped but the trainer decided he didnt like em I removed them and gradually prolapsing again. I think they suit the purpose at hand but was wondering who else had used them on race horses and had they had any problems slipping as thats the only problem i can think theyd cause. Our trainer here didnt have any reason he said he just didnt like them.

You could use a 3rd millenium frog support pad with equipak squirted underneath, thats what I use these days and you will have plenty of traction with solar support.

sometimes it is used on a very flat footed thin soled horse that is training or racing on a hard track.
winter time can be brutal on the feet of some.

Ok Dave what you can do is double foam board the shoe. This is done by cutting a foam board to the inner web of the shoe then once this is done cut out a frog shape. Stick this to another foam board then place both on the shoe. Put the hoof down for the horse to weight bear then lift up again and cut off any excess foam board. Apply Equipak from the heel, allow to set then remove the foam boards and you will have a full sole support of equipak with an artifical "equipak frog" allowing for plenty of traction. This achieves the same result as I was describing earlier but is a bit more time consuming.

yes it doesn't stay in long; by the time it comes out you do/or should have some sole strength

This puzzles me. I don't shoe race horses, but I have never had equipak come out before pulling the shoes. Sometimes it is hard to get off the foot even with the shoe pulled. Do you all deep seat the shoe before applying the equipak? I just use the vettec mesh, and have occasionally not even used that. Maybe with gallopers my experience would be the same as yours?

    Regards

id be careful , all that weight and filler on a 41/4 or 41/2 inch foot with what a 5/8 x1/4 plate seems like a massive handicap to me , your 2 yr olds must have a lot more patience than ours if they stand long enough to apply the stuff

They wont be running with it Chris so I don't think the weight will be a problem, il try remember to bring my old phone with me to take a photo so you see why im putting it in, my saudi phone has no camera. Its set in two mins here so no bother with most of them.

Il try that Marc I dont mind spending the time on this horse.

The above photo that jaye has put up with the foam boards stuck to his tits is what i was on about stick that to a regular foam board and away you go :)

For those here struggling with the mesh I never had trouble with it but you could try a Luwex pad, they dont fail on you and is faster application.

    They're falsies.

As to the weight problem of thick Equipak, a thinner layer of "Hoof Builder", which is harder though, may work.
