Having just got home from the ER I thought it might be funny to res-erect this old thread. I will start it off with today's gem.

First call was to an Arab yard. Sleepy gel is the norm here and its not my first visit, I should have known better. First horse was a mare with what I thought looks like a chipped bone in her pelvis. My job was pull shoes for the vet and X-ray, all went well considering the pain she was in. Then onto the rowdy bunch of brood mares. Client is trying to run them into a corral, they are having none of it. After 30 mins of clock watching I decided to get involved, yes I know the rule, dumb is what I am. I closes off the gap between pastures. I sees a grey mare loping towards me, and another runs across in front of her then WHAM. She hits me, sends me aot. I wake to hear the owner on the phone to 911. I try to get up but, drunk as a skunk cant stand straight. Then the pain hits. Off to the ER, nothing broke just bruised from butt to shoulder.

Rule.. Never help Clients catch crazy horses!

Brand new loop knife + hard as rock feet and frog + trying too hard = 15 stitches and a very sore arm for the rest of the week.

I have scar on my left arm in about the same place. Measures about an inch long, mine was from a knife that broke and the short end impaled my arm...about 25yrs ago..

I often say that my wife has more stigmata than Jesus!

She's impaled her hands 5 times! Twice with knives, with a broken ceramic tile, a nail and a lump of glass! Some say clever folks learn from their mistakes  Only last week I caught her trying to pry apart some frozen pork chops with a butchers knife

My most dumb similar accident: I was doing an electrical repair in a barn and jumped off a stack of hay and slipped as I landed and fell on top of a metal winding handle on a tractor implement which stuck in my buttock and impaled me there till the ambulance and fire service came and rescued me. Don't worry I'll not post a photo of the resultant scar which looks a little like uranus! ;)

That looks terribly painful. But....with some pain pills or a few beers, you could look at it as a learning experience.

Oh it was! Funny thing about pain pills...if you take them after having only had a biscuit for breakfast a couple hours before that...they will make you nearly bail out of the moving truck to throw up in the ditch. Bending over under horses after expelling your breakfast, as it turns out, pretty much stinks!

Planning a week of 50+ horses to shoe and trim thinking I had help. Help had other commitments so I did them all by myself. I feel like all those horses stampeded and run my ass over. Oh and I only worked five days. Very stupid.

Well I jumped on my Shetland Pony Mare out in the field. She's normally very sane. I thought if she starts trotting or whatever I can just jump off, I mean my feet are practically draggin on the ground. Well she didn't trot, she went straight into buck and I landed on my head. That'll teach me.

Stupidest thing I've ever done? Lord, that's easy.

Her name was... well, the name isn't really important, is it?

The point is, the nightmare lasted for five years and cost me over $250,000 cash before I could get out of it.

Yeah, it was worth every dime. :D

    Cheers,
    Mark
