Linda, l've adopted two horses that cannot be ridden that the owner's couldn't/wouldn't care for. l do care about the animals.

Kim at this point in your business I think this is the right way to go, just like discounting the price for one and not the rest. One of your other customers will find out and want to know why they didn't get the discount or the freebie.

    hmm, two reasons:

    1. it'd look crappy
    2. more forging=more pain at the moment

My mentor said he would help me if I needed it and I will be talking to him tomorrow.

George I think you and Linda should move because you must live in a bad area, you two are the only people I have ever heard that are always talking about not getting paid and people being scumbags, scabs and such.

If the racetracks are so bad why have you guys stayed shoeing there so long?

It only took 8 yrs and a marriage to a good woman, to get me to walk away from the track & the associated dregs of humanity. I do remember some of the horses fondly but none of the humans (owners, trainers, Vets, stewards, jocks, or the 10%ers)

Some of us are slower learners than others...

I don't believe I said anything like that. I said that you 2 are the only people that are constantly talking about it. The guys in your area must be terrible since you have so much trouble.

I probably won't get the opportunity to find out, had a race guy ask me how much for shoeing some once, thought he was going to have a heartache. He got to stuttering pretty bad.:D

I think Kim has a valid point. It's earlier in her Career than most of you and she DOES have kids to take care of.
should be first point right now. Period!
you'd have to be the kid that went hungry as a kid and had to be on the other end later in life, working 2 jobs and need horses shod ( nokidsiolved) to add up your budget for the month, decide how much you can spend on groceries and then call the farrier for 6 horses and for years, you Never let him know how much you were scrimping for your "toys".
you do it because it's what you've lived for all your life . . . and i've paid to have other peoples horses shoed because MY farrier told me about a charity case that couldn't pay. so maybe that might be an option. tell your other "regulars"
i don't mean the guy who calls you out of the blue. i mean someone that's always been good and i've done it where it cost me to have 4 shoes put on and a bump and then what's a $5 bill when someone else needs it and your farrier says they need help?
Gawd it's hard to correct your spelling mistakes on this site!!

I raised my son alone no money from his mom....he made all practices and games. Was in bed at a decent time with a fresh bath or shower before hand. 2 semesters of college left and hopefully B S in Nursing..then I can think about me...until then, if I give a break on a shoeing job, until the current gov makes me do all my work for Free I will do it on my own once and awhile..:)

WTF is Kim doing wrong? Who in the world needs a horse. They are a luxury. An expensive luxury. Dana's story is exemplary. Someone who want's something she can't afford but works for it and doesn't expect someone else to pay for it, even in the form of a discount.
It seems to me that these people ought to be helping Kim out. I don't think I could do what she's doing, and that from the point of view of the father of thirteen kids. I had a lot of help from my wife and kids to get through.
I think that wanting a discount for a horse is low enough, but wanting it from someone in Kim's situation is lower than whale shit.
From what I know of Kim, she'll get through all this to be well off enough, and silly enough, to probably help out some sob story horse owner down the road, as I do occasionally.

i had one today, girl wanted 4 shoes on her horse but could only afford snow pads and corks for the fronts. So i thought well she's a year round customer and always pays cash ., I'll throw in the hind pads and corks . Merry Christmas.
After i finnished the horse she threw this beautiful winter turnout blanket on her. And said you like that blanket , i just got it on sale for $200'00bucks. Then showed me her new $300'00 puppy she had in the truck.
