My little brother is an oil engineer in Houston, Tx. He sent me a box of sucker rod (4140 steel which is more durable than the A36 I have been making tongs out of). These tongs should last a long time. I started after lunch today when I got home. Cut the threaded end off and started with two pieces that are each 9 inches long.
Had my 12 year old hold them while I drew the reins out with a sledge. The hardest part is done. Have to go refill the propane now. More pics tomorrow.

Dana, Talked with Craig and Ray both this afternoon and it has already changed charities to 'Don't brush off breast cancer'. I will bid on my own tongs for $75. From this point on, the winning bidder will be donating to saving 2nd base.

Really? I said, " I would throw in an anvil". The anvil that I sent with Scruggs yesterday for safe keeping. I was pondering wheter to donate to the Farrier's Hall of Fame or give as a gift. Scruggs turned me down. The anvil is one that I drew thousands of clips on. The anvil and stand is that of Seamus Brady. It needs a home for a farrier that has "a passion" . To Mr. Scruggs, he knows my passion, I know his passion he knows my dedication to "family" and he put in a place of safe keeping for me, we ; us.
good for you, jaye perry.........here is a tidbit........Seamus Brady was in the IUJH and knew John Reed, Sr. who taught me; and he knew of me as well; and the late Clem Beacon, a IUJH. I have John's and few of Clem's shoes. I'll have to post them one day.
Dammit Jaye, I don't need another anvil but sure like tongs. I was going to go to $100 just to make it fun and then you go and double that. John, can you put up a how to vid or pics, looks like I'll have to make some.
Folks, before this goes too far, I think we should keep the John Scruggs tongs and Seamus Bradys anvil that is being donated by Jaye Perry as two different auctions so as to not hijack Johns tongs. I have put in a phone call to Jaye and after I speak to him ,if agreeable will start another thread for the anvil ,Jaye will designate a charity if he chooses and I will have a picture of the anvil at the Summit. I deleted a post of George Geist and ask all participants to help keep this from getting out of hand while we have some fun and help out a good cause. Thanks Ray

Ray, Thanks! I have been pondered about the Anvil and Stand. I have not been "pondered" about Mr. Scruggs' abilities. As you note, "our students become more adept than we have been". Thanks to Mr. Pethick for saving an Icon for me and others.
