I have been giving 4-H shoeing demos for the kids, at Lynn's school Career day and what I do for a living; and gave my first informal talk on shoes and their uses to some owners at a feed store..and...will be giving more of lecture here soon to owners and trainers on the shoeing and how to know what an abscess, bruising, gravel is ect. uses of shoes, differences in raceplates, aluminun, steel, standardbred shoes, wedge shoes, navicular shoes, barshoes look like!:coffee: most don't know what shoes are?.....old story..ex. my vet wants a navicular shoe on; and my farrier says it's just a rolled toe shoe, only. he put it on; but my horse lame and vet says farrier must put a navicular shoe on. what's a navicular shoe???....no one can explain this shoe to this person. ect. ect.
owners need to know to have the horse in, clean and ready to go; when we get there; or nervous horse in barn; keep in the round pen.
have payment ready; and give some cash; because sometimes we need to some cash on us for lunch. reschedule appts, and have an estimate on what the next shoeing bill will be; so to have payment ready; if they should pick up another horse, before next shoeing.
part of what my talk will be.

I would be happy to work on them if their owners were willing to pay my price. Most likely they've been poorly handled. A normal horse will choose flight over fight, until they are taught that they cant flee. Now you've got psychologically damaged, animal that will more likely charge at you like a bull, because that's the mode of self preservation they have learned to depend on.

Yeah, that would qualify as a bad horse in my opinion. Have any of you seen that movie "Buck"? Pretty bad stallion in that. Mentally irregular due to oxygen deprivation at birth, if I remember correctly. The words "never" and "none" are a couple I try not to use.

OTOH I agree that a bad owner can make a bad horse, but it's still a bad horse. I agree that that sometimes can be changed.

The worst of the lot that I've encountered, I was able to get them to trust me and their primary handler. But it doesn't take much for somebody to screw up, break trust, and cause the horse to revert.

Makes me wonder how many people from the US immigrate to Ireland vs. how many Irish immigrate to the US.

Most people I know living in the states would move home tomorrow but for one reason $$$$$$$, there's nothing like home where ever your from. People from smaller economies will always move to larger economies and people from larger economies will rarely move to smaller economies that's just the way the world works!

And Im sure the people who were responsible and to whom many were indebted would be humble enough not to keep pointing that out on internet forums. :D

No it didn't. Unless of course you were a crony of one of the fiefdom protecting guys who sat on the board that was in charge of the testing/examinations. The instances of one farrier ratting out another just because the other farrier did not have his state registration prominently displayed are legion. But, being such a strong Unionista, you would know all about rats, right, George? To be fair, I freely admit that unions leave a really bad and sour taste in my mouth but then again, I bore witness to the Teamsters and their total and absolute corruptness up and down the eastern seaboard and into the midwest.

I will not admit to a lie. My success is due to many factors, including help/assistance I got/still get along the way from other farriers, hard work and the AFA. The licensing board had absolutely nothing to do with it.

To which I say Mushroom Fertilizer. There was no hue and cry to not sunset the Illinois licensing of Farriers Law/Act. And since its been gone, no hue and cry to reinstate it. From what I've seen over the years, sunsetting the Act reduced the rat population all around the state.

You sure you meant 'machinations'(sic)? Cause if you did, I completely agree. And that's but another reason not to allow what you propose to happen.

Yeah, right. Wanna bet how long it would take for the 'Good Ole' Boys' clique to yet again rear its ugly head?

George you sound like a camera with a broken shutter. Clique, clique, clique(sic).

And what of those who can shoe a horse but choose not to do so? Besides, even though they may not be full care hoof care individuals(ie: farriers) why should they not be tested to a standard and allowed to provide services within the scope of their license, much the same way as people who drive motor vehicles are restricted by the limits of their license? For example, which I can drive a car or truck up to a certain weight limit, my license does not allow me to drive a motorcycle or or other vehicle such as a semi that requires a CDL (commercial driver's license). Even the WCF has designations that depend on one's level of knowledge and competency. Which begs the question, do you suppose penalties for 'misconduct' are meted equally regardless of level of registration attained. ie; would a DWCF be treated the same as an AWCF? And would either of those groups be treated treated the same as a FWCF?

Well, the two trades/professions long ago parted company. Not all Blacksmiths can or should be farriers, and not all farriers are true blacksmiths. Nor should they have to be.

I presume you are referring to horseshoes.com? If so, you actually believe that site consists mostly of horse owners as active participants? ROTFLMFAO! And since I don't frequent any internet sites that cater to British horseowners, I have no idea (and probably neither do you) what the level of complaining and whining is (and face it, much of what we read from horseowners on the internet is whining that would not occur if they were actually horsemen/women) across the pond.

Perhaps an example of 'stiff upper lip, old chap. eh, what?"

[quote[When it didn't get renewed it was a case of Illinois politics at it's best.[/quote]
Perhaps. The salient point being that it was an ineffective, useless system that benefited none but a select few.

Mushroom fertilizer. It was a corrupt, political, Good old boys clique that was only in the 'best interests' of that 'special' few who were members of that clique.
