Do any of you guys use an anvil stump? Like the one cliff carol sells? If so do you find it beneficial over just a metal anvil stand?
I looked at it last year, when I got my new anvil. Couldn't afford both at the time so I made one (sort of) by laminating 2x12's and putting legs on it out of black pipe from lowes. I'm sure my model is not as great as real "stump" but it's so much nicer than a metal anvil stand. Hope that helps David
I am probably wrong, because I have never used a stump, but I like my metal stand because of the vise attachment that saves me steps. However, the stump may be so good that the steps don't matter. jbm
The advantage of the stump is the stability - it has three legs so ground doesn't have to be even close to flat, it also keeps the rebound in the anvil not transfering it to the stand so there is no bouncing of the unit when forging, even on totally flat ground I find the stump much more stable. I also find it less combersome when loading and unloading but that may just be me. I made a vice that goes in my hardy hole if need be but my baldor with expander wheel has made it so I really do not need it.
