They were poorly made and weighed more than the rules allowed, Because of their thickness, an Arab's hoof had to be cut really short in order to stay within overall hoof length restrictions, especially when a pad was added..... Do you even know what the weight and length restrictions were back then?

no, they wanted those shoes on; I didn't cut back the foot; had 1 leather pad; it was many years ago, more like 22yrs; not 15 like I stated. I just remember I had one left over and very rusty when I moved into my new home 1 1/2 yrs. ago.

Who cares what they wanted? By your actions you shod the horse illegally. Had they gotten caught, who do you think would have been thrown under the bus? Twenty two years ago, the shoe weight was limited to a maximum of 14 ounces and the toe length, including shoe and pad, to the ground, was(and remains, 4 1/2 inches for purebreds and 5 inches for part-breds). There is no longer a weight restriction, rather a stock dimension restriction eg: no more than 3/8th inch thick and no more than 1 1/8 inches wide. On the bright side, people like you who shod horses illegally made a lot of money for folks like me who were/are show farriers. I/we spent a lot of time and made a lot of money getting those horses legal before they were shown. So, I suppose, "thanks" are in order.

listen, you know....22 yrs ago; they could have training the horse for all I know; and shoeing illegally....give me a break; maybe in the show ring; but just had one horse that all.
this is why I want more farrier education; because when you are first starting out--owners and trainers will pull the wool over one's eyes; and others don't say a word.

"More farrier education"? Hmm, the AHSA(now known as the USEF) published and still publishes a rule book containing all the information you would have needed to know to shoe the horse to the standard. Doesn't matter if you are just starting out or not. It is your responsibility to know the rules, have an intake protocol and act accordingly. Its your responsibility and no one else's that you do your due diligence before you get under any horse, let alone a show horse.

Do you remember who first brought up shoeing an Arabian with a toe weight and pad? (Hint: it wasn't me).

Linda, As a side note, sorry Gabino, I was taught the only way to nail up those damned diamond toe weights, with a pad, was to straighten it out first, then rebended it, inside out; you got acceptable nail placement and sort of a pre rolled toe. Much easier to turn your own.

Rick, as to the "Rules", in the show ring, anything is legal as long as you don't get caught. Had to be pretty sneaky(hoof packings of lead shavings/mercury mixed with oakum, standing them in water to double the weight of the leather) with Arabs because their fellow competitors would turn them in. Morgans, it was almost anything goes, except barshoes (some heels would be so close only the thickness of a business card separated them). I don't think I nailed up very many legal weight shoes that went to the Nationals.

In toe, that size 2 has 45 mm. The heels have 20 mm. Tickness 10 mm.

You're correct (at last), Justin. However since the trend of the discussion was swirling around Linda you were replying to Brian.......Regardless, whom have I called names at other than perhaps you? And even that assumption is rather a stretch. If you feel that I have perhaps impugned you, all I can say is, if the shoe fits............LOL! By the way, how's your prep for the meaningless hot iron bending competition progressing? I expect to see reports about how magnificently you performed at said meaningless contest. If not here, then perhaps on George's site. Maybe you'll post photos too?
