What about those farriers who keep horses sound? Are they not worthy of "best in the nation" status too?
What if said farrier(s)were [allegedly] among the best in repairing quarter cracks but couldn't trim and/or shoe a Trotter to trot a two minute mile let alone a sub 1:53, etc. ad infinatum?
IOW, to you, the 'best in the nation' only involves success with horses that have soundness/lameness issues, right?

I think there is a lot of things you need to be a farrier
and one of them is to be qualified IMO

Keeping a horse sound over many shoeings is easy.

Flying in from out of town and fixing a lame horse in one shoeing so that it is never lame again and requires no followup, that is a miracle.

I like qualifed. I dont know how it would of worked out if I could of just turned up and done the job. At certain points of my career I have worked and studied and it has made me better as a farrier. But what do I know.

John, Chris, Tom,Rick Zach, David,Shane and anyone else,et al

it s great to like "qualifed" , but what/who defines qualified, why?

and before any of the organizations/groups/legalities existed to define the position, how did a horseowner know if they had a farrier, horseshoer, iron hanger that was "qualified" ?

If there are no exams... can you be qualified? Who /how decides what should be on/part of the exams?

    Thanks
