    That's just stupid Ray who defines a qualified doctor lawyer etc before exams? That's what the meaning of qualified is. You have studied and passed exams to become qualified at something.
    Obviously owners just use/used someone who they believe to do a good job and they are happy with their service, owners havent a clue though so the idea of a qualification system would be to protect horse owners and horses to some small degree, and yes there are still shit qualified farriers but what if you had to go for a triple by pass tomorrow but there was no proper medical education system, there are still shit doctors out there but its still better they have to be qualified to work no??

    As to my qualification, I just keep it simple. I used to introduce my self as The Best Farrier In The World. Now I introduce myself as The Best Farrier In The World Ever.
    I figure who's going to argue? If someone were to challenge me, fine. We'll meet at Big Flat, up the south fork of the Smith River in August (105F, tons of flies), see who can shoe the most horses (that I'll be getting paid for), and who dose the nicer job. If I were to lose the contest, I would just have to say "I'm the second best Farrier in the world".

    Who or what decides if a person is a farrier?

    In the UK a group of people ( read bureaucrats ) decides. In the US the free market decides.
