John when i started I could tell you who had shod any horse in the county just by looking at the job. Now I ask who shod a horse and I havent even heard of them!
Tradition says John that if a horse was lost in batle the farrier who would be riding had to cut off the hoof of the fallen horse, with the number burnt into it, and return it to prove the horse was dead and avoid the rider getting court marshaled. The farrier rides to this day with an axe on his back at ceromnys, Im sure you knew this but others may find it interesting. http://www.skydive.ru/en/household-cavalry-museum/652-how-to-prepare-for-a-parade.html
Cool stuff, David. The carriage horses in New York City have their licence number branded into their near fore hoof. Very poor work on those horse's feet. The best work I saw was just passable, and one of the drivers told me they couldn't get any one to shoe hot. The Police horses were done fairly well.
one time i use to shoe most of the carriage horses that worked the Stevens Green in Dublin they were a doddle to shoe ,They all were done cold
