I used to think I was rubbish at cold shoeing, But I was amazed at how good it looked when I came back to it 6 weeks later.
John and Gary, I m only answering a question from John, I shoe to my best all the time, and I charge what it is worth! others can do as they please, ,hot ,cold , warm with or without! it has always amazed me that folk find ways to put others down, in such slick ways, but bottom line, if the horse walks off good, hasn t the man or woman farrier/horseshoer/hoofcare provider etc., hot ,cold,microwaved, done a good job no matter how it was the good job was achieved. regards ray

I agree with everything you say. A good job is a good job, doesn't matter what you use to achieve it... or what you charge for it (and I'm not good enough to be putting anybody down)

Gary, I see you hang( or seem to) on to a previous post of mine where i tell of the saying from John Skubeseski(spelling probably not correct), an old blacksmith in Northampton MA. USA, "if you give it away you said what it was worth" or something similar, and you felt it was a word game or some such, not sure or the exact phrase you used,........... you told of trimming a couple for free and how much you felt it was appreciated..... i cannot argue those facts that you stated... but for consideration...... had you trimmed one for full price and said ,pay me for he other when you can, without you the farrier/hoofcare provider, taking the whole loss for a customers tough times(whatever caused them,yet not being yours) not have been appreciated as much? bringing it up for thought ,not judgement. Actually, it has always been quite easy for me to get people to "send Bill Adams the finger". Sort of a gift I have I guess. As to the subject diversion of this thread, I love how threads can wander around. As I started this one, I Approve All Messages Above. I'm not really trying to put anyone down, just stirring the shit. I know there those out there who can shoe a horse with a claw hammer, bumper hitch, and Diamond shoes and do a better job than I do hot. I'm just saying that there are a few things that can be done better hot. Another thing: A cool way to impress the chicks is to fire up your $1200 lighter (Forgemaster) to light a Sherman. The hard part is to find the chicks who are impressed by smoking.
A hoofer is limited by his or her inability to shoe (oh i hope they bought that b.. sh..) A cold shoer is limited to what he or she can buy (cr.. i forgot to restock) A hot shoer is limited by how much crap he or she can load in his truck (oh sh.. the tank is out) A farrier is limited by nothing .
When I look at a hoof done to suit the task at hand , shod or not shod hot or cold shaped over an anvil a stall jack or with a bender, whateverIF its a nice well balanced trim with a well shaped balanced shoe compensating if needed for the inadiquisies of the hoof to balance the limb then who am I to scoff at how they got there I, We can only do what the horse or its owner will let us do and sometimes the KISS system is the order of the day yeah as stated by others a good job put to floor is just that What the individual charges for their service is their business and if they can earn more than you or I then good luck to them the only thing I don't like is loosing clients to people providing infearior work because there cheap or because IVE made a rectum of myself some how OH and Ray A Farrier is limited by his or her skills or ability and their imagination and heart
Just to get in on the conversation: I almost always shoe hot, sometimes cold, most just get trims, depending on a variety of circumstances. But one thing I try to do is to employ all methods with an equal level of incompetence, and to not verbally judge others or their methods ( except those BUA bastards ) . Regards

Actually Ray, I wasn't harping back to that conversation (though I did think you'd pick up on it) it was a reference to the fact that a good job is a good job however it is achieved and whatever is paid for it. I've seen some expensive jobs that I would consider not up to scratch and some inexpensive jobs that i would aspire to.
