Draft horse shoeing

    The largest draft shoe I've ever built was from 1" x 1/2" stock and about 7 1/2" wide. I also used 1 1/4" x 3/8" on the same horse but never thought he was big enough to require bigger stock than that.

    i might have one to do tues/wed he would be around the same as yours Tom
    shod him once before with 1 1/4 x 1/2 it looked about right for him
    the bigest i made was 23" 1 1/4 x 1/2

    Used to keep a few pair going, Smitty. They kind of went out of style here and when I turned 70, I quit doing them. 1-1/4 by 1/2 was my general choice, sometimes 3/8. Never went wider than 1-1/4, seldom went smaller. Usually 18 or 19 inches of steel.

    WOW! I don't think that would fit in any gas forge I've ever used. Did that include heel caulks? Even so that would be a foot obout 11" wide, no?

    I had a carriage company I shod for with two percherons and I hand made the shoes for them because in the beginning their feet were wreaks...

    Kim the app made the pair of fronts at the forge while we were loading up and sharpening knifes and stuff
    25 mins approx made from 1 1/4 x 1/2.
    got to the 1st yard 7 horses to do i got the 1st year to strip and dress this lady in front the other lad
    started another horse he was getting a set cold.
    i fitted and nailed the pair the 1st year clenched up the fronts 30 mins
