We have a built in cement hot tub. 6 years, really haven't used it much. So now, the timer doesn't work, one of the jets doesn't work, and the heater won't heat the water. We call this pool guy and he gives us this estimate of 1k for everything but the heater itself (2k) or the electronic panel on the heater (650.00). He can't know if just replacing the electronic panel on the heater is enough, in other words, he can't know if we need a new heater (2k) until he fixes the electronic panel on the heater. So if he gets the jets working, a new timer, a remote control, new filter, and replacing some small air tube, and a new heater will be over 3k. Does that sound expensive? Does this stuff really cost that much?
Fire the pool guy and get an electrician. Heck, even I know how to use a volt meter to check if a heating element is working.
Yea, I thought that sounded kind of stupid. Another thing is his new propane heater, if needed, cost 2k inc. installation. An electric one cost 600.00. I think we'll go to electric. For one the propane company is a PIA because we don't use enough of it. So they charge us tank rental and a charge for not using it enough. AND the hot tub is 5-600 gallons and the propane tank is 125 gallons. Go figure. That tank is massive. I need another estimate, LOL
An electric element should cost 60 dollars not 600. I think you are being done I think that I might retrain as a hot tub guy. I will get in there and lounge while Tom does the screw driver stuff
You guys are too funny. Dana, for 3 years we have not used that sucker at all. Before that for 3 years I used it maybe 15 times. The propane just sits there. I hope the propane company will come back and take it. David, this is Florida. There's alot of pool service. I called the company with the electric heater. It's $1200 installed. We may have to call an electrician to change the service from 20 amps to 50 amps. It would make sense to go electric. If I had the 50 amp service, I could install it myself. Plug it in, connect the water in and out pipes and there ya go! I'll bet the electrician could do it. Oh yea, the pool guy said he has to replace the panel on the propane heater-that's $600.00. If that's not the problem it's another $2k.
Okay, cancelled the $$pool guy. Electrician coming tomorrow. And I will ask him if he can connect the electric heater. If he can for less, I can get the darn heater on Amazon for $500.00

Thanks, Rick. I did take your advice and go to several hot tub websites, but those forums are into how to replace parts inside things, not much on how to replace a gas one with an electric one. So far, I know how to buy an electric heater, install it, run the water in and out. But don't know how to prime it. Also, how to empty the propane tank. I hope the propane company will buy back the propane. If not, there's Craig's list.
