Denise if you had a sneaker on one foot and a high heel on the other . . . then you have a choice of being sneaky or sexy.

Call me stupid then cause I've jacked them up and they were much more comfortable.

Eric, did you use the patten shoe (and I assume you shod in pairs and was it on hinds?) or did you just simply wedge them up "pretty high" (whatever the hell that means)?. Any idea WHY they would get relief from jacking them up and how long did the effect last? months? years?

Denise, Why would you put Pattenbar shoes on pairs? I wouldn't want both pairs unless their tendons on both were either severed or severely bowed? I have used many but only on one hoof at a time? Just my experiences with them.:)

Eric was talking about jacking up heels on DSLD horses, I just asked if he used pattens. If he did, I would assume he would apply pairs because DSLD presents in either pairs or all 4. The Jan Young protocol I cited was using pattens for DSLD. Which again, is not logical from either stand point of how the patten shoe is presumed to function; ie. whether it takes tension out of ddft and places it in sf and sl or removes entire leg from majority of weightbearing.

    Gary,
Denise, although she is a very smart lady, doesn't pretend to understand shoes in general, and patten bars in particular. That's why she's asking. I have to think that Dr Young, despite her title, falls into the same category. Denise is looking for answers. I think Dr young is pretending to have them. My only conclusion regarding Dr Young's contention is that the good DR's success with treating DSLD with the shoes was either a mis-diagnosis, or a total anomaly. Her suggestion of using egg bar shoes with wedges to take strain from the sesamoids affected makes more sense. The shoes pictures in Dr O'Grady's article are poorly constructed, and I think in his case also, He's trying to mimic the effect of an egg bar with wedges, in which case, why not just use the egg bar and wedges?. Simply "jacking up the heels" is neither the purpose or effect of properly applied patten bars. Understand that, and your other questions will be answered.

Same goes for you Eric, unless you can offer a more detailed explanation. It just doesn't make anatomical sense. I'm with you Denise. Someone please enlighten me.

( Edited to change "neither" to "either" and "of" to "or". Don't overlook the descriptor "Simply" )

    Regards

So if I understand this correctly, you have had/treated horses in your custom with unilateral DSLD/ESPA that have responded favorably to having the heels of the hoof of the affected limb elevated to some degree, right? Do you have any photos of the affected horses? Do you run into very many horses with confirmed unilateral DSLD/ESPA?

Can we use the full title of the conditions for at least one post for people to follow. For instance DDFT (Deap Digital Flexor Tendon) itmay seem like a pain in the arse but it helps all follow the thread and improve there anatomy. It is my pet hate thank you in advance.

Or just include a list of common acronyms, somewhere on this site.

Nope! Just say once in your post what it is, that is the recognized form of writing.

Ok, to me a Pattenbar shoe is a "Rest" type of shoe . Movement should be restricted to hand walking and the heels slowly lowered over time.. as to DSLD the fishbar shoe seems to keep them comfortable? Again movement should be controlled but more liberty would be allowed in a lot rather than just stall rest...JMO :)

So its fair to say that suspensory injury could respond to the induced unloading that a pattern bar shoe could afford.
unlikely to be fixed by a patten bar shoe or a fish tail shoe if its a Degenerative Suspensory ligament Desmitis.
