    Did you charge less 'cause you only had to pull half a shoe?
    I have a couple of those that have been worn through laying around.

    I have some old school ranchers who I went to last week, the last time I was there was in April, early April. Two horses had all their shoes on still, two only had two shoes a piece on. I gently tried to suggest to the 80+ year old lady who owns the ranch maybe shoot for two or three months instead of four. Her gruff response was, "Or whenever we need it!" Being raised by a ranching grandma I said, "Yes ma'am." I expect a call sometime in December or January :D

    No Tejun!!
    you just say it is when the horses need it; not whenever you need it!
    Just walk away and tell them that "you can not give them the service that they require.!!!"
    If they want you back the price has triple for triple the work on your horses for not putting them on a schedule that "when the horses need it"

    You really have no clue how things work out west. You ae not going to walk onto a ranch and tell someone how to do things. You make this statement after always saying the trainers at the tracks say how things go. Know what your talking about before you type (open your mouth) and prove you know nothing.

    Like Tejun said, being raised around a ranch, he knew what to say and just let it go. Get done what your there for and come back when called if the horses are good and the money is as well. If a man had to make a living shoeing ranch horses out west away from town, think real ranches not ranchettes, he'd either starve or have a second job to buy beans.

    I don t believe it s just an out West thing,
    if I read Linda s past posts she shoes as the trainers tell her, but internet ink is cheap, so one might as well fill up the screen.

    I meant what I said. As the horses lay in their stalls, they rub the toes of their shoes on the walls.

    As to rancher mentality, the only way Tejun could raise their opinion of him would be to drop his price.

    and that is what is wrong in this business.....when it's unregulated industry like this; this what you get.
    If you can not afford to give an animal what it needs; then you have no business having it or in the horse business; period.
    this should be taken a lot more seriously than it is. LAPPS here is heavy into making sure large animals are protected; and having good farriery care.

    I looked it up in on the WCF website and in the UK the owners have to get there horses either trimmed or shod within a 10 weeks; or face charges.
    Dave Hall, others am I right in what I have read in the Farrier Registration Act of 1975???

    sometimes yes; sometimes no.......as long as it doesn't hurt the horse on trainers wanting in shoes. they don't tell me how to shoe it; but what shoes they want on a particular race, turf/dirt, traction, toe-grab length ect.

    Correct.......that's all they care about......how cheap you are and how fast you can slap them on; just like at a gyp track.

    Linda did you mean "if they can't afford to give an animal what it needs"? as too the Hoofcare Police, do you really think they send people around checking on this? I don't think so. Look at some feet Smitty posts and well we all know the Irish have limited Farriers there I believe? :) He shows some feet that have been long overdue as the same we see everyday here? Only thing, Smitty always makes them look like he just won Calgary!!:)

    here we have LAPPS {including ASPCA, and other animal rescues} and they are a good large animal protection and they do a good job of making sure that the care of livestock is up to par including farriery. I guess we have a mentality of animal care here were we live; and people spend money making sure our animals in our care are given at least good quality care. The out west attitude wouldn't fly here and the law enforcement would be paying them a visit.

    You're kidding, right?
    I had a customer call today asking me to come sort out her pony which has a loose shoe - I thought I hadn't seen her for a while, so I looked up her last appointment in my diary - the pony was last shod on May 9th (15 weeks).
    Not an isolated case.
    I don't criticise, I just get on with my job, because I need the work.

    It might have been another site from Europe........I was reading a lot that night......but I can call them WCF and find out.
    yes, looks more then 10 weeks;
    but I just took 2 inches of one of my horses I shoe on regular 6 week schedule;
    they have grown a lot this summer here in the states; and it was only 8 weeks {off schedule}; and he had a massive abscess in the right front.
