how many of shoe heavier behind as routine ? one thing i have observed is that the hinds always wear quicker than the fronts and as a general rule tend to put the next section up ie 3/4 x 3/8 in front and 3/4 x 7/16 behind

Whilst I would generally agree, I still shoe with the same section all round (most of the horses I shoe don't wear out their shoes anyway) but coincidentally, I shod a horse today that had more wear on its fronts than hinds, so like always, it seems it's 'it depends'...

For me,Most often ,fronts get the heavier weight shoe when in fe. all the way around and tend to get the most wear For me,hinds tend to be shorter length of material of what ever section is used so if the same weight per inch then the hinds are lighter just because fewer inches of material is used. I often use a lighter weight section on the hinds as well.

I find I have larger shoes behind as I want to hang more steel out around the hing feet.

I took almost all 8mm or 5/16" out of my truck. 00 fronts do not come in 10mm or 3/8". A good moving horse is a good moving horse. The muscle force/torque of the horse to weight ratio of the shoe is numerically insignificant IMO. The bigger the "Iron" nailed up makes for better feet. Kerkhart 00 hinds come in a 20 x 10 mm; lovely on a quarter horse behind; 1400 pounds and 14.3 hands; ponies included.....

A clean moving horse will cope, and a poor footed clean mover will benifit with a bit of iron. I have shod a couple of good winners at the chelt festival with what some would describe as a heavier shoe.
