No, not on every day work Chris. One should be able to judge from random samples of lateral xrays of their work accumulated over the course of time whether or not their external references are consistent and reliable.

And IMO until one can reliably confirm over many random samples that their external references actually do line up with the internal truth revealed by xrays, they shouldn't be teaching others or asserting themselves as an authority on the topic.

It took me about 6 years to accumulate enough "evidence" in random xrays of my own work to give me some confidence that my personal accuracy was consistent and reliable. Add to that another 6 years of random xrays that validate my consistency, and I still don't "teach" from a position of authority or publish "how to" videos because I still haven't figured out how to convey what I see to another farrier in a simplified step by step cook book methodology.

Tom thank you for clarifying a few points, at NO time do I say this is the center of rotation, its a line on the foot at the widest point. I dont explain to the apprentice while fitting the shoe the difference between the center of pressure and the center of rotation etc I just draw a line, reread what I say. at no time do I say Grant is shoeing to the center of rotation, I say he picks out landmarks to fit and trim to. I suggested center of rotation as its a starting point for ryan to google or read from.

Given the choice between the views of someone who has spent five years working on a degree that included a thesis requiring the in depth study of the anatomy of the horse and dozens of dissections of the lower limb and who also regularly backs up his opinions with examples of his work, and someone who habitually answers posts with smart-arse remarks and rarely posts any of his work to back up the odd constructive comment made, I know which way I'd go...

    Tom,
Though I tend to agree with you, I the case of the foot David posted, any disagreement can be settled by a meat saw down the center.

Before this decends into a bun fight, Gary, if I had said that line was the COR then I was wrong, however I didnt, Tom pointed out that in his usual way :) but thats good. What would be good is if people could suggest places for Ryan to look, to improve his shoe placement. Grant is as some one said the other day the worlds best hands on clinician in the world, on a par with a few others but we know who they are to. Ryan if you watch a few of his vids and others like Craig Trinker, Jim Blurton fitting his bar shoes and Chris gregory and try and pick out points then you will improve.

You said (my bold for emphasis)
    . . . and then

Seems to me that is what you implied and illustrated.

There are plenty of big names, except Craig Trnka, using the "widest part of the foot" in clinics making similar implications without acknowledging that one can place the widest part of the foot anywhere in a relatively large range along the baseline of the foot by how one chooses to dress the outer wall.

Craig's methodology and reasoning is DIFFERENT than what Grant Moon and Steve O Grady and several others have been presenting in lectures and in written articles regarding the "widest part of the foot.) Craig Trnka places emphasis on dressing distortion such that the widest part of the foot is deliberately made to correspond to the bridge AND he gives solid mechanical and geometric reasons WHY. He also places emphasis on how the curvature transition going forward and backward from this point should be mirrored in the A/P plane. His methodology is good geometry and IME it does produce repeatable and accurate results.

Can you find hell without a map? When you get there can you explain why or how or will you just drop names and cite authority? :p

Tom you are a pathetic little man!!!! you tell me what you think I implied, Your good at thinking, you keep at it and regurgitating others thoughts your good at that too. I admit you are the worlds leading expert on others thoughts . :D You want to take me on then bring it on. :D you couldnt shoe a horse if your life depended on it :D

David, I'm confused. Are you saying you didn't write what you are thinking or that you think what you wrote is different than what you were thinking or that I think what you wrote is not what I thought I read?

Tom you will have to do better than that if you want to row with me. I made it clear what I meant, your interpretation was wrong. Dont remember saying Craig fits to the widest point of the foot either. There you go telling me what you think not what you know. :D Bring it on Tom.

This should be interpreted as an example of me "not shoeing a horse."
