An example of the work in my area. This horse was sent off to the trainers a week before it was due. Owner said it pulled a shoe and was reset by a farrier there. I said ok and and reset the others. 5 weeks later they get him back and call me because the hinds sound loose. I ask on the phone if he was reset all around and they say yes they paid for a full shoeing. Here's what I found: Do these hinds look reset? My guess NO. plus there where only only six worn down nail heads instead of eight. These shoes have been on 11 weeks. The reset. Cold shod this go round. Time constraints..... They have a ride tomorrow to go on, and I said I'd run by there to check out the loose shoes. I have to pick my kids up. I have to say, that if I were faster at this I could have done the whole horse, but I'm still trying to work on getting the job done better before speed is added.
Kim, on hinds you might want to heat the heels of the shoes and shape them like extended heels and that way you will clear the sulcus of the hinds ..it is beneficial for a horse to have some shoe behind them, it does help support the hocks and makes their stops alittle cleaner too... Let me make myself alittle clearer. If you shape the heels out LIKE extended heels is what I mean. You dont have to hang alot out there but short shoeing behind is just as bad as short shoeing the fronts...JMO
Just think about it in the future.. it will step up your work and understanding of what you are doing rather than just nailing on shoes..
Depends on the horse........ 2 hours usually on a good one. Has taken up to 4 hours before. Hoped you wouldn't ask.......... I know that's a long time.
One thing to remember - this is your best advertisment. If you don't got the time, then don't do the job only half way. Also you statement about the hinds only having 6 nails instead of 8 - I put a lot of shoe on with only 4 and they are still there the next shoeing.
Mikel, the comment was because the Guy who reset the fronts (and used 8 nails) charged my client for a full set when its obvious on so many levels that he left my hind shoes on. One hint was that there were 8 nails in the fronts yet only 6 in the hinds. If he 8 nailed the fronts, surely he would 8 nail the hinds as well. I had 6 nailed those Hinds and the nail heads were near worn off. Evidence they were not reset. I have 4 nailed many times, I have never 8 nailed one. Also, I was called because they had a ride today and the shoes were loose. I didn't have the time for a full reset, and the horses were not due til the 4th. We know now why the hinds were in bad shape. He was quite grateful I fixed that. Should I have said, "I don't have an open appt. slot. Hope the shoes don't fall off on the ride." usually when I am asked, "Dipped the quarters did ya?", I just respond in kind, "it's relief of the trim to let the water out!"
i really do not care what other farriers do in my area , it is not up to me to judge another mans standards and behaviour , i look after my own clients and i will only be as good as my last job . i even have other farriers come on to my yard to shoe liveries , its the owners choice to have who they have to shoe for them as far as i am concerned , we are blessed that there are good farriers here although we also have our pick of not so good , i will stick to my standards and let the others stick to theirs chris
