If I thought I was loosing enough bearing surface to make a difference, then I'd make a wider heal. But as is, I don't feel I am loosing that much.

A bit of practice you will get there, but you got to know why your making a particular type of heel for what the horse is doing.
then give him the intended heel fit

What proves one kind of heel check is better than another? For all we know wider heel checks could contribute to global w . . . , er, um climate change.

Think its mostly a preferince thing .unless there knife edge thin or have fixtures i would think any lode bearing differences would be minute.

If im getting under your skin Smitty i appoligise I mean no disrespect . While i may not agree with you on everything ,i do apprishieate your expieriance and concider your work to be true art. That said while i probobly havent made a hundred sets in the last fifteen years i have changed a couple tons of heels because in my world to mutch iron hanging out and over aint worth the problems it can cause. In our loose soil the shoe sinks and frog and sole catch the load and on hard ground the heels are still catching the same load IMO.no matter how much iron you hang under them. ??

I haven't made many shoes at all, but I made a pair a couple months ago. I purchased a horse with some deformed feet this weekend and they went right on.
