Well, Bill, if you're comparing, it would not be "nurse talk" with a patient present. It's more like non-farriers who own horses taking an interest in the sometimes awesome work farriers do, what farriers have to put up with on the job, and learning a bit about what's right for their horse. Would you say that if farriers like having conversation with only the selected few, wouldn't it be better to make this a private forum away from all eyes and by invitation only?
Bill it does make some sense that the tone of any conversation changes with the change in participants, location and audience. It is part of the risk of speaking up - you are gonna get heard and over heard LOL. But seriously, considering the potential that what is being typed here is going across the www ... well ... lil' ole Karen, Susan and Mary Ann should not put much worry on you. And lordy no nurse would dare post about a particular patient - but we sure as heck might share or banter general stuff publicly. However, nurses of higher stations than ourselves (managers, educators etc etc) would not dare do so in public or in confidence.
And of course I agree with Karen - we are footie groopies! We love talking feet! Just like we like to figure out how to improve our ride, our feed, get a better saddle etc etc etc. It is part of horse ownership for us. But in no way shape or form do we advise our friends on feet, or what saddle to buy or such. We know enough (from hanging here) to let folks know they might want to call a Vet or Farrier or Trainer. And I know it is the elephant in the room - but I want to remind people that Mr Underpants did point out some of you might not recognize that when he seems to be being mean with someone you all just misunderstand him. He is best friends with Karen and me. Really... we are buds from way back. Who the heck do you think gave him the recipe for that heart attack on a plate he is eating tonight? Yup he loves us. And we do all we can to keep him sharp and edgy.
What's asinine about the situation is how the guy treats his horse. About once a month he hauls it to the mountains and takes it on a 6 hour trail ride pushing the horse as fast as it will go until it is dehydrated and no longer able to maintain a consistent gait. At this point the horse begins to stumble and step off its shoes. So the guy is complaining because I can't shoe the horse so that it is "safe to ride" when it is plum wore out and falling down. I was talking to Bill about this on the phone just last night and I've talked to two other farriers about it. What would you do?

Like, owners should be seen and not heard? That's an easy fix-do not allow owners to be members. You know, like registration denied.
Saw the doc today. He said my cholesterol level is as good as a 25yr old's. My afternoon client for today called and rescheduled her appointment for Monday. It was 98deg.F today and since she is a nurse she didn't want me hot shoeing her draft horse it that kind of weather - something about not needing to practice her first aid treatment for heat stroke.
I think a lot of us want a place where we can come and discuss our profession with another person engaged in our profession. Possibly learn something. We deal with owners all day, having a farriers section allows a farrier to discuss things he encounters on a daily basis with someone who may have encountered the same problem or success. Having an owners section allows the owners a place to post and ask questions about whatever they want, and gives a place for a farrier to engage in a farrier-owner discussion if they choose to. I also feel it would be easier to moderate if there is a distinction between the two. I'm talking no special privileges whatsoever, if your not a farrier you post in the owners section, then no body can get there panties in a wad if one non farrier is allowed to posted but another is not. Farrier is defined as a person who shoes horses by Websters dictionary, as far as figuring out whether someone is a farrier or not is pretty easy for most of us in just a few posts. I have trouble understanding why some think it is degrading to them to not be able to post somewhere since they are members and all members are equal. I don't go into the women's bathroom in a restaurant, it's pretty simple there's a sign on the door that say who can go in. I am a paying customer but the sign is pretty clear. Yes there seems to only be 4-5 owners here at the time but what about a year from now, then we will have to go thru this again and some will get mad because certain people are allowed and certain ones not. If you want a farrier/professional horseman forum I would suggest COTH if this place goes that direction it will end up as big a joke as that website. I drop in there about twice a year and look around I don't see to many professionals there, I see a lot who think they are professionals.
I don't think anything is being deleted. It seems like what is actually happening is that the post order changes immediately after you post, then when you refresh the page, the post order changes again to reflect other posts that wer added while you were posting . . . confused? Me too.
Rick Burten, Tom Stovall, Patty Stiller, Seth Parker, and myself all post regularly on COTH - and Eric Russell occasionally. Mostly we post to counter the disinformation put out there by the pretenders and BUA. Thomas Fletcher used to post there but got banned for some reason that the Mods haven't seen fit to explain. Probably excessive use of perfect grammar and spelling.
In all candor, I gotta say it is sad to me that some of you guys may not know how much owners really do appreciate you. I really think for those that want farriers only - well they should have it. Just make it a closed board. Night and props all.
