John, I m sure that she does...but i d like to know how diagnosis can be made with so little information! ray
pictures are worth a thousand words...........John shod the horse correctly......but if the owner doesn't address why this horse is doing this in only after 10 days of shoeing; then it is a soreness issue.....and what I have experienced in the last 22 yrs shoeing plus my 3 yrs as an equine vet tech; plus taught from some of the best standardbred vets on the east coast with over 100+ years education and experience between them and telling me this is what happens, one with a Phd.; then I have to conclude Sir that they are right; and what they are teaching to look for and at is correct.
Linda, run it by some of your "best standardbred vets" on the east coast, with or without a phd. and 1000 yrs of education and if any of them emphatically diagnosis and prescribe without seeing the animal and or pictures, films and workups, please get me the collective names so i and others can be warned about such practice. To be clear, I have no problem with off hand discussion about all kinds of problems, but you diagnosed, and suggested treatment , not only without seeing the animal ,but also, you are not a Vet. . Please keep that in mind. In my opinion, farriers, blacksmiths, horseshoers, iron hangers, union or sub human do not prescribe nor diagnose surgical procedures, i m pretty sure that is true in most countries that have any sort of government. John, Can you tell us anything about the conformation of this horse, approximate age, what condition and wear pattern on those hooves when not shod or when you 1st worked on him/her along with Linda s questions? To me, # of days a shoe lasts is pretty arbitrary, like bragging how long tires last on a vehicle... if the vehicle never leaves the carpark , they might last 12 plus years before they rot... on the other hand ,if the vehicle goes 400 miles a day over hard terrian the same tires might be good for 6 months or less. I m guessing this pony goes long and fast over lots of concrete and macadam, at least the ones belonging to the travellers that i have seen were. Think of that concrete or macadam as a grind stone, only pushing on it is a 1000 lb pony ,not some little human being of 110 to 300 lbs. to me, it all adds up. Some competetive trail horses will wear out untreated shoes in 7 to ten days, similar to the pony shown but more even wear. Those same shoes on a pasture pet will be resettable a # of times. Looking forward to your additional info. Regards Ray
In Ireland they are generaly quiet, light, only need a lick of a rasp and the owners pay cash Is it a pacer or square trotter John?
Most of the pacers i used shoe used wear that way to some extent, its an unnatural gate. Do you find the same? A lot used even be hobbled when training to force the stride. I used love shoein them, handiest cash id earn all week.
Thanks! Horse does H/J classes and I cut 11 inches of 3/8 x 3/4. I will do some before and after of this one when I get home.
