Two boxes a day keeps me going, seriously though, i dont play golf but i always hear people say its the challenge every time ya go out on course, i think every foot ya pick up is the same each is a new challenge.
It's challenging, physical, technical, something new every day, good money. I can't imagine having to do anything else, most days. I wish I had another 20 years left in me, but I doubt it. Regards
Do I enjoy my job? I don't have a job. I work harder than most people I know, present company excluded, of course, but I don't have to go to my job at work. I get to go shoe horses every day. I do arts and crafts and play with horses. All my pyromaniacal needs are fulfilled. I even get payed, over payed even.
Bill, I respectfully disagree. Although I don't really know you, I think that you're probably under payed. Regards
Bill's wife here; saw this as I sat at the computer. Thank you for saying so Rick. You are so right. He is a true craftsman
I like people, horses, outdoors, a different location nearly everyday. Those are the things that keep me doing this "job". It's the only work that I have ever enjoyed. I enjoy it so much that on my slow days, I move everything around so that slow days become empty and I make sure it happens on wednesday or friday and I go work with John Muldoon just for grins.
What Bill said!!!! Now the 6milliondollar question that if you get correct there is no way you are winning anything but the naming contest ..what is Bill's lovely brides name? She gave him like 15 kids, fertile kind of guy!!!
15 kids?!? Do you think we're crazy? We only have 13. You can't guess her name. I've only heard of a half dozen women with this name, and only met one other than my wife.
Back in the early days of television, Groucho Marx hosted a tv show called "You bet your life". It is alleged that one evening he was interviewing a couple. Groucho asked the couple how many children they had. The man replied "9". Groucho says "Wow, 9 kids, why so many?" and the guy says "I love my wife very much." To which Groucho replied "Well, I love my cigars, but I take them out once in a while.." Cherish?
John, We only have 13, and we cheated, the youngest two are twin girls. Rick, My wife dose like that name but not really close, therefore, no cigar.
John, I truly love what I do ..... it has become a passion....... I have done a few different things in my life, (i have a Masters degree in Architectural Engineering, am an accomplished cabinetmaker/custom staircase builder and love to mess with wood, and a self confessed learning junkie..). I think what has held my interest in farriery over the last three decades is that I find it to be a constantly evolving science with no "end point"..... every foot is a challenge and a learning opportunity..... The "feel good" that comes from the immediate positive feedback the horse gives you when you have helped him through your efforts, is a hard one to find anywhere else in life. Mike Wildenstein asked at the beginning of the MFA clinic last month, "what is your goal when you go to trim/shoe a horse"? My answer was immediate... "to leave them better then I found them".... Horses are honest as rain..they will let you know how you did right away... they don't lie...pretty honest creatures..... Most of my clients are most grateful of my efforts as well... just yesterday I had a long standing client give me a framed drawing of a farrier shoeing a draft horse , ('cause I don't shoe drafts), thanking me for keeping her "Canadian Sport Horse" on such good feet over the last seven years. I know she paid $300 for it..one of the nicest gifts a client has ever given me. (Oh...call her what you want, ma'am, but that there is a Percheron mare....). As Christmas approaches, the flow of gifts has already started, and I'll end up with more good bourbon, cash, and homemade goodies than I man should ever have....and it's not the gifts but rather that they think enough of what I do to say thanks.... With a chronically ill wife that now needs 24/7 care, A Navy SEAL son that's seldom around, the world just seems "right" whenever I'm either under a horse or on a Harley...... Dave
