So what do you do when you get called out to a place and you show up to find the horse in need of something the owner can't afford? We all want to see the horse comfortable...they don't have $$$ to pay for what the horse needs...now what???
That's the best problem we have here in Spain.The not payements.A farrier said me yesterday he has 65oo euros not payaments.
Make sure you make them sign the slip acknowledging that you did the work. Signing an authorization to do the work is even better. Then you have a leg to stand on in small claims and, and they will know it too. If they refuse to sign, you can be pretty sure you won't get paid. Then its your decision to make. With me it often depends on the situation. I can usually tell who won't pay me. Regards
This is a situation where it is beneficial to accept credit card payments. If the client doesn't have the ability to pay in full with a credit card, then how can they afford to have a horse in the first place? Even without a merchant account, anyone can take credit card payments through PayPal, and anyone can pay through PayPal using a credit card. If you offer the credit card option (or PayPal) you should be able to make a decision based on how the client reacts to the offer.
Made a decision long ago not to take food from my family's table to finance other people's luxury hobbies. Had a Vet tell me that they dread hearing "Do what ever it takes, money is no object", means they're not going to pay a dime.
I dont tend to not worry about money, I shoe the horse and get paid (generally) I will ALWAYS put the horse before the bill, but might not be filling the hoof with modern materials without some confidence in the payee.
I seem to have more trouble with the people who have it the folks that are battlers will give you the shirt off their back If you havent got the funds n tell me so and your fair dinkum Ill help I try the kiss system try to keep it cheap If youve got the doe n your appearing to me to be miserable I tend to walk having said all that Im there for the horse and I tend to be sucked in by them particularly if their a nice horse after all they dont have much say in the matter do they
I'm not much in a position to be extremely generous as some have suggested. I am a single mom with 2 kids.. So like Bill said it is taking "food off the table" Also feel I should be fair and if I do it for one,then I would need to do it for others.
Done a pony maybe a month ago lami pony he was down for a pair of fronts. he could hardly walk, i made a pair deep seated bar shoes for him and just charged for a normal pair known the owner hadent the extra Euros you just do it (pony is flying now)
no excuse.....I am in the same boat; and I will do occasionally................................sometimes it is better to give, it will come around.
Not an excuse.... Statement of fact. you and l have different beliefs. If l'm not financially well off enough to do for all such cases, then l don't pick and choose.
