Poor quality photo, but some of my recent handmades, never made any of these shoes before, they are all first time attempts, pretty pleased with them, but need improving :)

I got today my barstock concave. It's the first time in my life that I make a concave shoe.

Gabino, have you ever tried to catch a squirrel? The secret to working concave is NEVER let the squirrel see your hammer. :D

The adjective/adverb for today's vocabulary exercise is "squirrely."

You can hit it hard, but you have to sneak up on it to hit it so it bends without wiggling and twisting like a squirrel.

You use as much strength in your left arm as in your right arm when making shoes, If you dont counter the hammer blows with pressure from the tongs then the metal bends unevenly. If you watch a good man work he forms a circle through his hammer, metal tongs and his body. Power is increased by forming a lever with your tongs that counters the hammer. Hammer speed does not improve forging. What do I know though :D

Ah, I see... I thought he had more problems with frogs than squirrels...

Here's a photo of the first concave shoe I built from bar stock. Subsequently, I spoke with Bro Bloomer. He gave me some tips about frogs and squirrels and hammer use. While I now have some lovely, crisp and crispy, frogs and squirrels, and have become rather adept at sneaking up on them, my concave shoes still remain a work in progress ;) :)

Rick, technically those were recopies, not "tips." AND "sneaking up" on road kill doesn't count.

I was waiting for a customer yesterday and remembered seeing Smitty's concave bar, so thought I'd give it a go. Concave 005.JPG

Lovely job Mikel! Do you usually weld shoes at the toe or what made you decide to weld this one that way.
