If it is necasary then it is nesesary, but given as a whole, I am not a big fan of aluminum. My feet seem to just hold up better with steel. I think it may have something to do with the ridgity of aluminum over steel because if I go to a reall wide section on ali. it seems to hold the feet together a bit better. I have a horse wearing 3/8 x 1 ali on a 13 1/2 foot now and his feet seem to "like" it better than 3/8 x 3/4. I don't really know why that should make any difference but it seems to in this case. Also, I have found that with the elements, rain ,urine, manuere, etc., ali. seems to react with the foot and oxsidise. I don't know if others have found the same of if it is just because of my climate - very wet. Then again all of this may just be in my head because I just don't like aluminum. :)

My preference, experience, and superstition;) agrees pretty much with everything Chip said.

I have had the least corrosion issues with whatever alloy Kerckhaert is using on their aluminum Century Support and Triumph shoes.
