A client sent me this pic, supposedly of a "friend of a friends" horse. Anybody ever seen anything like this? Can it be real? 181223_653503488009226_1564272577_n.jpg

no, Q: could it be the f raise of the wall ........like what you see in as the hoof wall breaks up and there is hair like protrusions? or could it be at the gravel...as it grew out ---pulled in some hair????

    Linda,
    What is a 'gravel'?
If this is a hind foot, it was probably scratching it's belly, and got some shedding hair in there.

Since I've also seen this pic on facebook a couple times - sort of a friend of a friend thing, I suspect it's another photoshopped internet hoax. Shannon, the term "gravel" has been around since before I was born (and I'm quite old) as an explanation for unexplained lameness and hoof wall imperfections with the idea that some of that gravel that gets into the white line works it's way up through the white line causing the problems. I have asked a number of vets and farriers if they have ever seen either radiographic or physical evidence of gravel within the hoof or a hoof defect and no one I've asked ever has. Goes along with BTHOM syndrome, which is more honest. -- "Beats the hell out of me".

There was a [long ago] time when people thought that an actual piece of gravel or the like, penetrated the hoof capsule at the level of the white line and then traveled proximally until it exited(erupted ) at the coronary level. No one ever showed that to happen. However, what has been shown to happen is for purulence to travel upwards and exit[vent] at the coronary level. This happenstance has been closely associated with the idea/concept that the purulence was caused by a gravel impinging on the white line, causing an infective process the result of which is the purulence seeking the easiest place to exit the hoof and thus traveling towards the coronary band. Thus, today, when we see a horizontal vent line either right at the coronary band, or elsewhere on the outer hoof capsule, we commonly refer to it as a 'gravel line'. Interestingly enough, when purulence erupts from the bulb(s) of the heel(s), folks usually remark that the horse "blew an abscess" rather than 'vented a gravel'.

I would really like to see what lies under the hair over the coronary band on this hoof..to me it seems that the area has a flatline to it. I have seen a lot of coronary bands that have been sliced by either a barb from barbwire or from a strain from a cable fence that came apart and the coronary was sliced and yes abit of hair did grow down and off. In this picture it shows it twice and I find that hard to believe?

Only thing that makes it even slightly real, is the areas of growth are perfectly in line to what might have been the orginal insult? Before the Bunny Huggers got their way and shut down the killer plants, I used to go by and get feet and saw a lot of unusal looking things that can happen to a horses hoof..

It is an abscess............if it comes out the bottom it is called an abscess; if it comes out at the coronary band it is called a gravel; and as it grows out it is called a cleft or a false quarter.

    Rick,

i m passing on this advice, I got it from an old maid,

buy your interested party a jar /tube/ bucket of Nair, the dipilitory(hair remover) , print up a label with your name on it along with instructions, be sure to charge up the wazoo, you will be a hero ,and that hoof will be smooth, silky and slick, I ve thought of useing it to control my "stache", I heard that Bill Adams has added it to his pony tail regime.

    hope this helps

    ray
