The largest draft shoe I've ever built was from 1" x 1/2" stock and about 7 1/2" wide. I also used 1 1/4" x 3/8" on the same horse but never thought he was big enough to require bigger stock than that.
i might have one to do tues/wed he would be around the same as yours Tom shod him once before with 1 1/4 x 1/2 it looked about right for him the bigest i made was 23" 1 1/4 x 1/2
Used to keep a few pair going, Smitty. They kind of went out of style here and when I turned 70, I quit doing them. 1-1/4 by 1/2 was my general choice, sometimes 3/8. Never went wider than 1-1/4, seldom went smaller. Usually 18 or 19 inches of steel.
WOW! I don't think that would fit in any gas forge I've ever used. Did that include heel caulks? Even so that would be a foot obout 11" wide, no?
I had a carriage company I shod for with two percherons and I hand made the shoes for them because in the beginning their feet were wreaks...
