Everyday Shoeing

I live in west central illinois. Just moved here. Where I lived before I was was spending some time with a journeyman farrier. Unfortunately, when I moved away, I also moved away from him.

What town

Near Aledo, pretty close to the quad cities.

Don't know what I was thinking wrong side of the state for me.

Banged away today. I want to make a set for a big horse I usually trim but my goal is to tack these baby's on if only for a picture lol. But first I want to make fronts. These are a keggy hind haha

careful nailing up some of the heel nails are way to course and you might bleed the horse

do you ever nail on any of your handmades?
have you ever made concave?
it's easier I think; when you understand it's properties. it acts like an outer-rim in raceplating.

PS. I know made lots of mistakes on this shoes; especially the nail holes; using to thick of a punch/heels . ect

don't rack(stair step) your nail holes, follow the "groove"..

Is that concave or did you make that in a block?

that is concave.
I on my 18th shoe out of making concave bar stock. Smitty has pointed out that my tools are all wrong for concave/heels still need a lot of work.
Any advice on using concave would be appreciated.

Today's work. Should have raised the middle clench up. What are your opinions on slim blades? Should I switch?

CH Slim 5 is probably the most popular nail size in most of the USA.

try using a rawhide or wooden mallet instead of your turning hammer, it won't chew up your section; you'll still have to use a steel hammer for your heels and clips

Or just don't hit it hard at the wrong time.
