Hello I'm a 18 year old farrier student currently studying at Brinsbury college in Pulbrough, West Sussex, after my next year at college I need to start looking for an apprenticeship, as I'm hoping to take a gap year out and earn as much money as I can to survive, if I have to move, however I'm really interested in learning in the army as I think if I can shoe under those circumstances I can shoe in any. Only problem is I don't know how to go about it so any messages or feedback would be much obliged. Thanks Lauren :)

I didn't realize any army still had farriers in the ranks. I guess your best bet would be to find your nearest army recruiter and tell them what you want to do and they will tell you how to go about it.

Well I read an article of a farrier training apprentices at Buckingham palace. So I know they do that but my tutor went to Saudi Arabia to train the army how to shoe so I guess they still do it

The British Army is still in Afghanistan for a while and they still use horses to get Special Forces around the mountains there.

Can you send me names of the female farriers? I thought the shoe standards were different in the USA to here because I wanted to train there but I don't think I could come back to the UK and shoe

    Hi Lauren,
If you are looking at entering into the Army to be a farrier, you would have to contact your local army careers office. As far as i can remember, you will have to sit a few tests and for certain regiments you will require certain high school grades. You will then embark onto phase 1 training which is the basic military training that ever soldier must complete. after completion of phase 1 training, you will go off to phase 2 special to arms training. Assuming that you want to be a farrier, I would expect that you will end up going into the "Kings Troop" Royal horse artillary.

    http://www.army.mod.uk/join/20177.aspx

Joining the army to be a farrier will be a longer process. You will have to complete your phase 1 and 2 training and then spend a few years in the troop before being able to go forward for selection as a farrier.

The farrier at Buckingham Palace will not be training apprentices there, and there are no military farriers in Buckingham Palace. The military farriers are a bit further down the road.

There have been a large influx of female farriers and there is 1 that i know of in your area.
Due to the current farrier situation in the UK, I am unaware of how the system will be operating for the short term (regarding funding). There will be some ATF's here who could explain what is entailed for somebody who wants to find an apprenticeship.

    Good luck (y)

Then I'm not sure how you become a farrier as my certificate that I should get this year passing only lasts 3 years so I don't quite know how to go about everything. Any chance someone could please name some of the female farriers so I can try and contact them

    What is the certificate ?
Are you Looking for an ATF ?
Why are you only interested in finding female farriers ?
Do you want to do the farrier course through a civvie role or Army role ?
Does your college course not provide any continuation advice for the industry ?

Just a few questions to enable us to give a better and more helpful answer.

Well I was going to go with an art but after funding was pulled I thought about the army because I thought it would be brilliant experience. I want to find female farriers to see how difficult it was for them to get through. After my next year of college I have to look for an apprenticeship to carry on, the qualification from that last 3 years next year's course is all the board work. Not sure if that makes sense and helps?

Lauren this is a country of equal opportunities for male and female. You will get employed on merit not gender. most of the questions you want answered have proper web sites and telephone numbers, Your project for the week is decide what you want to do, phone the relevant institution and get some answers. There no gender preferences that I know of when ATF'S pick apprentices.

Real men think it's cool for a woman to swing a hammer. ;) IME you will not find prejudice against women farriers from men or other women farriers. OTOH, I do know a few very accomplished women farriers over here in the states that have complained to me about being unjustly discriminated against by WOMEN horse owners. Go figure.
