It looks a bit cold! It was -26 here (Mt.) when I woke up this morning. Anyone shoe horses when its that cold?
I have shod at about minus 10, but those were special circumstances. Normally at those temps there no overriding urgency to do the work and once it goes into single digits, I reschedule.
I find that below zero, things just don't work right - tools, forge, horse, hooves, me. I can trim at just about any temp, but shoeing is more complicated. ( Jack is Superman, by the way, I wouldn't want to have to follow that guy around, LOL ) Regards
It doesn't usually get below freezing for extended periods of time here but this year has been an exception. I usually don't work if the high for the day is in the 20's.
Actually, Rick, I'm getting pretty whimpy. Since I rarely take a new client, most of my clients, as well as their horses, are getting a little long in the tooth and most of my practice now is trims. With the winter we've had, I'm glad it's that way. Trims usually aren't a crisis (those horses are not going to a show next weekend) and can be rescheduled for warmer weather.
Jack, when do you think we'll get that promised warmer weather? This week has been mostly the horses that had to be rescheduled because the cold last week and the week before. It's only been 2 to 4 degrees warmer but with more wind. Whoooppeee
This polar vortex can take a hike!! Another round in 3 days, but suppose to be on the warmup at the end of next week..for awhile I hope?
I guess this Polar Vortex thing is a very serious result of Global Warming. I remember when The Polar Vortex used to come South into the U.S. several times a year between October and April. Back then we used to call it "Winter".
Don't all of you know that any fluctuation in the weather is caused by mankind? Just ask Al Gore! And don''t you know we all have to be taxed so "we" can do something about it?
I think that somewhere I have a picture of me looking that elegant, but everyone thinks they just photo shopped my head on someone else's picture.
Nice picture. By the way we get our first hint of green grass about a month from now. Truly green about May !.
Went to Salenstein, Switzerland this past weekend to a Farrier clinic with Ric Redden, Amy Rucker, Stefan Wehrli and Ludger Beerbaum. This is a view of the Bodensee from where the clinic was held. Temps in the 50 s
No he doesn't just gave us a little insight of what he looks for in the shoeing of his horses. How he plans his season with tournaments and the shoeing schedule and how important he thinks the cooperation between him, the vet and farrier is.
