I have this theory, when you reach 65 you should be able to have everything free, food, electric etc, if the roof springs a leak then the council send round a man and he fixes it, if you need a wide scree telly then the government should give you one!!! Imagine if such a scheme existed!! Oh it does, you just need to have lots of children and be un employable....

5 sets a day x 120 dollars a set x 5 days a week x 50 weeks a year... 150k a year puts you in the top tax bracket over here

If your profit over 5 years (assuming you depreciate large investments like a shoeing rig) is over 50% of gross income then IMO you're kicking ass in this business. And after doing it for 25 years with a $75k net, you'll have enough in savings to retire and pay yourself a nice pension and travel the world enjoying a life of leisure because you lived on $50k and socked away $25k/year in good investments.

I had I had a gal call me up several months ago and tell me my prices were too high according to an old farrier who was mostly retired. I charge forty for a trim and eighty for all four shoes. She called me back later and told me the old semi-retired farrier had agreed to shoe her horses for a case of beer. Can't compete with that. Other farriers in the area charge 45 for a trim and 85 for all four. And one guy charges 30 for a trim or 25 depending on the client, and eighty for all four. The old gal mentioned above told me how one guy ragged about the trim the previous shoer had done on the horse he was working on. Going on and on about what a terrible job the previous guy had done. Then she told him she had recently bought the horse from so-and-so and she had told her that he was the last one to have trimmed the horse.

I'm afraid there are a couple of guys about the neighborhood who have no qualms about knocking a guy under the bus.
