I had a conversation with a man yesterday(i won t embarrass the old fella), who is at the age in life that he says his finishing is not up to snuff if he is not wearing his reading glasses. I suggested that if he stays very close to the hoof he would not notice the coarse rasp marks and could protect his vanity and never see the marks. From experience I can tell you that if I had longer arms I would never need reading glasses(cheaters). So the question(s) is , what works best, and how do different folk handle the the sweat,fog etc. associated with farriery and the inevitable for some of us,glasses. I m sure some folk of a younger age will have some fun with the 4 eyed folk, but in 20 or so years you might be looking into the archives here for tips. thanks Ray
I suffer from Keratoconus (google it) and have been wearing hard contacts for the past 57 years. A real PITA for our working conditions, but that, along with a cool dry climate have made sweat, and humidity a non issue. I do use readers now, but can just use them for things like finish work.
Interesting you should bring that up Ray.... I do find that while clenching the inside of the hind foot there is a certain element of brail used. If I where readers while fitting I have to judge the difference differently cos it all looks so big......
Mrs. Steele got me a pair of "Clic" reading glasses(cheaters) for Fathers Day. I had been breaking 2 to 4 pair of the Dollar Store glasses per week, and loosing more to boot. These hang round my neck, but are secured at the nose bridge by two small but pretty strong magnets,as of today i ve not broken them nor lost them in the 2 months that i rcd. them. Bout equals what I probably would have spent on $1.00 cheaters. And they are comfortable. I will admit that on more than one occasion i searched frantically for them only to find them round my neck! Wonder what arse put them in that hiding space? They have worked great while shoeing , at the forge, working on different projects and reading. When the time comes that I need real eye glasses, and I m sure that s not far off, I m going to see if the lenses can be fit to these things. As an aside, I had to dig out some old dollar store glasses in order to read the brand of these. Ray
this is my first year of wearing glasses full time shoeing. thank God it has not been as hot, as the last couple of summers. it's been aggravating but I'm slowly adjusting. Blue Cross/Blue Shield probably likes this situation because, knock on wood, no debris in my eyes so far. How do you long time glasses wears deal with sweat droplets and the damn fogging up?
Brian, I just inform my customers that they must constantly wave a palm frond fan over/at and around me,either that we only work on days that are not humid, cool and mild breeze.................. wake up Ray!!!!! carry a towel, wipe as needed, you and the glasses, I use readers/the half glasses,seems to let the hot air out, I can even keep chatting away and don t build up hot air,under the glasses at least. I wear glasses full time because of astigmatism. I can think of at least twice they have saved my eyes from injury.... costly, because it messes up the lenses, but better than messing up an eye I suppose.
