I ve been informed and looked it up on the Kearchert web site that some liberty nails are now being offered cu. plated. I wonder if other nail manufacturers will follow? Ray
they didnt work as claimed 25years ago , not new just a big advertising campaign that has changed direction over here already , they are now being directed to farriers on the premise that if you charge £ 3/4 more a set you will make up to £25 A BOX PROFIT
Chris, To me it s funny that you say that,I started plating nails about 20 years ago ,cu and wax, I be been told that they were the best since sliced bread and the they were useless, had folk swear by them and at them , but I don t make a claim as I thought I heard in the infomercial. I do remember David Nichols telling me years ago that they ,cu plated, had been a failure in Great Britian as far as he was concerned. Ray
I got in a conversation about this a while back. I feel a good hotset kills the surface bacteria, seals the hoof and does a good job at no extra costs to me.
Mikel, I had a conversation bout your thoughts just last week with several folk who felt that the heat from hot setting and or torch ,may increase fungus and bacteria! Just as your surmise, not scientifically proven one way or tuther! Further ,early on at the beginning of the Forums if menory serves me correct, a member Christo A...,worked at a University and actually took cuttings of hot seated hoof wall to the microscope and saw that the tubules were opened, not sealed after burning, The above said, do you have any long term white line on any of the horses you burn? If you come across a horse with white line ,say 1/2 inch up how do you apply the heat? Thanks Ray
Ray, there's a big difference between white line disease and bacteria/fungus. White line I will remove the horn wall, do the white lightening thing to make sure it's killed. Here it's wet. Hooves are wet, soft, and mushy, so much different than Idaho where I come from. I've seen great improvements in hooves after I started to hotset. You know the seedy toe thing? Well many times I will take the hot heal of a shoe before I hot set, and apply the end of the heel into the seedy part. Believe it or not, it is gone the next shoeing. I've seen a lot of the black stuff in the white line gone after a couple hot sets. I'm no lab geek, but I know it works for me.
Had a call and an order for 4 boxes of 5 sb Victory cu plated nails today, I ve pretty much been plating the Victory nails for the consistency of quality since the Capewell machines got moved. Anyway this customer has purchased cu plated nails from me since before I switched to the Victory nail, while at a clinic he purchased some of the E 4 that are being marketed, said that he noticed that there was no copper to be seen when the nail tip exited the hoof wall and when he came back to reset that there was no discenable change from when he set the shoes whereas he sees a difference with the nails that he gets from me. Makes me wonder if the thickness of the flash and or the quality of the cu. plate has something to do with it. The same questions might be applied to what was observed by British farriers 25 years ago! Ray

It s been about 7 months since I noted that the Liberty cu coated(copper coated) nails were introduced to the USA market, does anyone who have used them or other cu coated nails have any feed back on them? thanks ray
While looking up some info on the net, I see that a supply company in Great Britain is now offering cu plated Mustad nails in the new hammer head and some E head sizes, in the 20 years that I ve been plating nails i ve still not gotten to a firm answer as to if,it is beneficial, perhaps now that the major manufacturers ( Victory, Mustad, Kerckhaert ) are in it ,perhaps there will be enough data to form a conclusion. folks that may read this, if you use cu plated nails, or have used them, i d appreciate your feedback. thanks ray
It s been awhile since there has been any activity posted here, I m wondering if anyone could now say what they think of cu plated nails. Thanks Ray
