Sorry all, but I'm confused. What has been going so wrong here to cause all this. I expect to see a certain amount of crap on forums. There's always been plenty on HS, lord knows. I agree there might need to be some simple rules to keep things from getting out of hand sometimes. I think farriers giving advice should be required to sign their real names, and non farriers should be limited to asking questions or commenting. I'm not sure about the commenting, might be too vague. Personal attacks and discriminatory marks should not be tolerated. That would about cover it for me. I don't think we really need a babysitter, with a handbook of too many rules. Again, for a new site, I think this one is off to a good start. I don't get this "everything is going to hell in a handbasket" attitude, as inferred by the title of this thread.

THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!

Maybe if we have a ceremony, hold hands, sing Kumbaya, and sacrifice a few ckickens we can turn this thing around and make it a fluffbunny magnet.

Wow, JPT in reference to "a woman's place"

Nothing I start to type sounds decent enough right now. I've held many positions that are in predominantly male fields and have done well. This one I'm still learning, but I imagine in the end ill do just as well in it.

And find time to cook, clean, nd raise my children. Would it be easier with a partner, most certainly but I'm strong enough to do it on my on til I meet that person.

Kim, would you like to marry a man who is a farrier also so you could shoe horses together? Because i think jack mac is single and loves to teach?
But i think you are ok,but the question is how long you will stay in it until you break down.

Even I, referred to a woman as "Sugart***" earlier, am troubled by the level of chauvenism here. Women are perfectly capable of working on gentle horses. I wouldn't consider it wise to send a woman to shoe broncs. And I know some damn tough women who are good hands!

I hadn't appreciated that Neanderthal Man was still alive and the rubbish on here puts me in a mind of an old joke.

How do you get a man to stop biting his nails?

    Make him wear shoes.

Back then Patty was the first woman to enter the trade, she picked up alot of horses in a short time and all the horseshoers everyone hated her.One of the reasons was she cut her prices so low.I thought it was so funny how they all felt, they even got mad a t me because i wouldn't attend their meetings trying to get rid of her.I think basicly it was because she was female.
Then she disapeared one day and she apeared on the horshoes board as a natural ballance associate as a teacher.I think her getting a teaching job was best for her,We have all seen 70 and 80 yr old boy farriers, but if any of you come across a 70 or 80yr old female farrier, invite her over~~~

Of course you won't get a 70 year old female farrier! The profession has been steeped in machismo prejudice and discrimination until relatively recently.

The UK got it's first female approved training farrier only 3 years ago. That young woman was apprentice served and had been a farrier for 10 years when she gained Approved training status. So now in her mid 30's and with a lot more recognised accredited training and validated experience than a lot of 70 year old self-proclaimeds!

Nowadays the more enlightened and intelligent know that farriery is about technique and getting the horse to do the work for you. It is not a wrestling match where what's needed is some moron with an urge to demonstrate bullying and testosterone !

Of course it's a physical job and we all know there are lots of people who go into farriery and don’t stay in it for very long. Being bent down doing physical work under a horse is NOT easy EVEN if you have good technique but the fact that it's hard physical work is not a reason why women cannot make successful farriers. There's plenty of girls now entering the profession and who are proving themselves that they are physical enough to do it.

Over here every year, there's more women entering the profession and I've posted previously that I've employed 2 grooms that have gone on to be apprentice farriers.

Shamefully they still face discrimination and stupidity and sometimes face folks who think it's about brute strength and ignorance.

At the end of the day though faced with a big horse that wants to be difficult, a man has no advantage over a woman — the horse is stronger.
