I am presently working on a pinto mare who has x-rays showing 11 mm sole thickness. Vet has prescribed full rocker shoe.
I will be applying it in next few days along with a leather pad and forshners for a filler.
Vet mentioned he would like to get better blood flow front and rear to induce new sole growth.

Anyone else had experience with this type of a situation ?
Correction: the x-rays are showing 9 mm, according to the veterinarian, not 11mm. My typo....and lack of having info infront of me. Sorry.

    my 2 cents worth ;)

    Bruce,

I have found that Venice Terpentine based hoof packing produce more sole(ie more sole to trim) than petroleum based hoof packings, I say this as anecdotal not science nor as trying to sell one product vs another but as my experience.

Yes. This was 8mm. Also a pinto.

Went 2 cycles in the full web rocker toe. Once the frog and bridge were no longer prolapsed (the bottom of the foot was convex instead of concave), I added a leather pad, and a heart bar.

Ray, I currently have the horse in the pictures above in your leather pads and the custom packing you mixed for me. V. Terp/pine tar/leather dust. Seems to be working well.

When you consider that 15 mm is considered good, 11mm ain't so bad, what is going on with her feet and overall health?
How big a horse is she? Steel or aluminum shoes? Regardless, remember that with a full roller motion shoe, placement of the belly of the rocker is paramount. What about Impression Material or the like? I too have had success with venice turpentine though I usually mix it 50:50 with pine tar. I'n not a fan of Forshners. I prefer Hawthorne's if choosing between the two. Of late, I like the Magic Cushion Extreme and often will use it in the front half of the hoof with hoof felt or oakum, while using IM in the back half of the hoof. I have only used the Vettec Pink Label(soft) polymer a couple of times under pads, but I would consider its use too.
Did he do a venogram? If not, how does he know what the blood flow might be or if it can be improved?

    Karen,

Horseowners/non farriers are instructed to ask questions on hoof related subjects in the horseowner section. Not in the middle of farriers helping /advising other farriers.

Please post these questions to Tom there.

If Ronald Aalders was here,he could explain in good english that the banana shoe is a good option for increase the sole growth.

No he didn't do a venogram, and the sole isn't prolapsed either. When I got the x-rays I put both front side by side and flicked them back and forth for comparison and I see rotation (mild) in the right front and looks normal in the left.
The mare is 15 H has a weanling filly suckling and a colt from last year. She is a bit over weight but not obiece. Pasture is good and level ground, though she does go swimming in pond and owners said there are bricks in the pond. (stepped on one was my first thought)
Thanks Ray and all others for your suggestions. I will suggest the venice turpentine.
I am looking at aluminum shoe's Rick. This mare has always been bare foot.
I had even considered the thought that I might have taken to much sole off, but NONE of my customers and none of this womens other horses has come up lame and I trim pretty much the same basics on all.
In fact down here in Texas I am learning to leave more sole on because of the hard ground .
The ground down here in Houston area is different than what I had in Vermont or all of New England. It is heavy gumbo clay. mucky when wet and hard as rock when dry. Sticks to everything and horses leave pretty good holes in the ground when they walk and when it dry's there is a rut they amble through.
The first vet said it looked like laminittis and recommended this tech/vet for x-rays. He read the x-rays and said she had thin soles.
Tell me how to take the x-rays from my computer and post them on here and ya'll can make up your own minds.

UPDATE; I stopped there this evening on my way home and used my testers on both front feet. NO reaction anywhere on left front and reaction on right front only from the medial quarter to the medial toe. all other area's NO reaction.
Owners have been over feeding and feeding everyone 14 percent with molasses. Vet has cut them way back on feeding.
Tell me how to post pictures and I will get the x-rays up...
    my 2 cents worth ;)

Bruce, If you are going to use a venice turp. hoof packing I would strongly suggest you give Ray Steele a call and discuss having him make you a custom blend. He has don a great job for me making a combination half way between Forschners and Magic Cushion. He also made me a winter blend and a summer blend - in cold weather the winter blend is easier to get out of the tub, and in hot weather the summer blend is not so soft it runs off the foot when you apply it. I haven't tried his asparagus blend yet. But I keep asking about it.

What does this magical blend cost?

Do you wear gloves to apply ?

If not, does it accent the flavor of burgers and such at lunch?

Can I buy it in something smaller than a 55 gal drum?

I'm not interested in the aspergers blend.

Less than Forschners, Halls, or Magic Cushion.

    Depends on the blend.

Not sure. Seems to be overpowered by the flavor of Durasole.

I get it in pint, quart, or gallon plastic tubs.

Yea I get that. Asparagus makes my pee smell funny.

If I can get them to load here aree the x-rays.
Owners were aware I was going to post x-rays. should have deleted names but no one will be upset.
Tack in frog and wire on wall.

I would like to see a thicker sole in proportion to the wall thickness. Not a happy ventral angle. Considering frog support options?

Bruce, welcome to Texas Summers!! We have it all here in Gods Country, sand , clay, loam, black gumbo, swampy as I am sure all the other states do BUT. I find that leaving the sole open and the use of Duresole works 10 times better than a pad and anything under the pat to Soften the sole??? I had a lady call in a panic two weeks ago that the vet claimed her horse was bruising its coffin bone? She had just had the horse trimmed by one of our local fly by nights and the hoof was scalped not to mention it is a High Low type foot, it being the High clubby . No wonder the sole depth was gone??

    Depends on the blend.

To keep it on track ,kinda, and So that this thread is not an info mercial, I'll address hoof packing questions in the "word from sponsor" thread, if asked, not here. and ask that anything sounding like selling of my or other product, be removed by the poster.
