While shoeing today I overheard a Vet consulting with another shoer's client about her lame horse. The Vet had observed the horse moving, used hoof testers, pulled the shoe, dug around for a while not draining any pus and diagnosed that it was a sterile abcess caused by a "hot nail" on a 3 week old shoe job. The client told the Vet the horse was being ridden daily up to Saturday and it came up sore from the pasture Sunday morning. The Vet went on to say that this woman's shoer has the bad habit of putting the nails in his mouth, which would introduce bad bacteria into the hoof and that was the cause of the abcess he couldn't find. He sold her 'bute, antibiotics, poultice, bandaging materials, a soaking boot, Epsom salts and betadyne. I was surprised he didn't sell her the water too. Off he went without showing her how to bandage a foot

As I was finishing my client's horse, she asked if I could help her wrap up the horse's foot after soaking because she didn't have a lot of experience doing that. I agreed to help.
When I picked up the hoof. I noted that the 6 nail holes were where they should have been, the other feet were properly shod, the pulled shoe's lateral side clip was folded over to the outside, there was a gouge down the hoof wall and the horse was very sore above the clip seat at the coronary band. When I parted the hair there was quite a deep wound from another horse's heel calk but no blood.

The lesson of the day, Don't put the nails in your mouth or you can cause one horse to step on another horse.

I once was near a lameness exam like that. The vet said "BTHOM" syndrome - he'd been seeing a lot of it. Owner said 'What does BTHOM" mean?" Vet said "Beats the hell out of me!!". An honest vet.

She'd noticed her horse had been pushing his buddy (a driving horse, shod with the amish version of a CW) around the pasture lately. I told her to clip the area, wash daily, the bute/Epsom salt soaking and poultice on the top side instead of the bottom, will make him feel better and that most of us put nails in our mouths in this neck of the woods; so I wouldn't worry about that "bad bacteria". And I was pretty sure her shoer didn't have HIV or hepatitis.

Nice to know how easy it is to throw us under the bus.

No, this would be cranial-rectal disease on the vet's part

that's a direct quote; kind of like "jumbo shrimp" or "military intelligence"...

This morning, I did get a call from her shoer, Bill, thanking me for pulling him out from under the bus. In the past, I've tried to engage him in conversation when we've both been in that barn working and he was always stand offish. Well, he about talked my ear off until I had to excuse myself to go to work. I think it will be fun the next time we're at the same barn. I also told him, there's safety in numbers and if we're going to survive this market we'll have to stick together.

This is more of an "old one", but it was posted on the Maine Farriers facebook page today:
I need a cheap but reliable farrier in the Houlton area, lost our stuff to do their hooves now they are way over due, also need someone who can handle a hot headed mini.

Yeah, I'll jump right on that one, LOL. (YMMV)

Isn't "cheap but reliable Farrier" an oxymoronic phrase?
