This is a side bone shoe I made last night, and I believe it was Myron McClane who drew the picture of it for the Vern Hornquist over the hill class at the AFA convention. So the side clip was his addition and the placement was his choice. I am making a shoe each day and have five weeks left before Baton Rouge. I am looking for all suggestions.
grab a little less mass for your clip I put the bevel on at the side of my anvil so I don't worry about hiting the face of the anvil and can make a sharper bevel try not to go past the center of your stock with the bevel the last thing I do is take out sole pressure and it helps to leave a crisp line on the shoe Pretty good shape, is this your fist attempt at a sidebone? Can you rasp? if so its a easy shoe to clean up with a rasp
this is my 3rd attempt and no fileing allowed . I appreciate your suggestions and will do them with next practice tomorrow night. Thanks
Hammer finish really seems to fit sidebone shoes anyway I feel...I guess when I am building one, I want to make the shoe act like half a clog...?
Bruce the 1st thing i have noticed is you have your clip in the wrong place the clip needs to be in between the 2nd and 3rd nail hole not the 1st and 2nd that will straight away give you a better chance to have a better toe Pay attention to the specimen. also your nail placement is wrong especialy on the medial side also your clip seems to be a bob punch the specimen is a ball pein his heels are semi rounded with no noticeble check and he has an inside and an outside. your inside needs to be run up a tad look were his fullering starts and stops also when you bevel the lateral side your nail holes need to be the outside of that line not on the line
thank you all. extra eye's see what I am missing or just plain did wrong. I will use all this info on my next shoe.... It is very much appreciated
Bruce, to make that shoe better, soak it overnight in a pot of chicken soup. It will be better in the morning.
I tried that Rick, the chicken objected when I went to put it in the hot water. oops I misread what you said.
then shoe came out really nice at the convention. I had a really good time. I competed against Jim Keith, Lee Green, Bucky Hatfield, Billy Lewis, Steve kraus and a couple of others. Jim Keith won the class.
