On the quarter crack thread above - it was mentioned the foot grows wider as it grows down. Isnt this dependent on and as a result of sole width?

And it was also mentioned that defects that result in hoof cracks are sometimes a result of bone loss.
Is bone/circulation impairment that results in the loss of the sole width? Is this what makes the walls curve in?

With these things in mind, it is possible that some of the forces are at work with underslung quarters are simply that the sole is contracted?

If so - is it possible to make a sole wider??

Can you tell I do not do this for a living?

No. The wall is attached to the sides of the coffin bone. If the sides of the coffin bone slope outward so the bone gets wider closer to the ground, then the wall will also have to grow wider as it gets to the ground. Not all coffin bones are shaped this way. There is a lot of variation.

    Or deformity and defects.

Is there a subject for the verb?

    No.

    No.

    Not so. Yes.

If you are really interested in functional anatomy you should attend a wet lab cadaver dissection. It is very helpful to actually take the hoof apart hands-on and see with your own eyes how stuff works.

    Thanks Tom.

"There is a lot of variation."
    The new "it depends."
