I am looking at buying a new gas forge for making shoes. I would like your opinions as to which is better. Front and rear ports, or end ports, and why? Advantages of each? Thank you very much.

Side ports seem to work best for making shoes. You can heat a longer piece of steel.

What Michael said. For larger shoes you can hang one branch out easier to the side, than front. Forgemaster Blacksmith with dual controls. You can do a small job in a big forge, but a big job in a small forge is a pain. Sepnd a bit extra now and be happy.

The two best fires I have used are the swan competitor and the forge master in that order
