I would like to see people post about different shoe modifications. Like how you deal with suspensory problems, deep flexor, superficial, hock ringing, navicular, etc. Show different modifications to shoes you made to help these horses.

Supposably hip problems. 20 yr old Western Pleasure horse. Contracted and Base narrow on this right hind. Client is older and not showing right now so I give him some lat support and just trying to keep him comfy.

One thing that I think would help this horse is to lower the medial heel and quarter. That helps get the foot straighter under the leg and makes the lat support more effective. That will help relieve back and hip stress.
When you use a creaser to widen a branch like that, start at the last nail hole and go deeper and wider. That will give you enough iron hanging out so as to not need to punch holes inside the web. The way the shoe was creased, it didn't really widen the web, so when you move the shoe out for lat support, you lose support under the hoof and heel. I like to have the medial branch a bit shorter too, and not fit so full so as to increase the effectiveness of the lat support. Might as well box and safe the medial branch also as long as you have the grinder going.
Having the toe and lat toe of the shoe extended as you do will retard the breakover going forward and in turns which puts strain on all of the above, like hips. I'd have pounded a rolled toe and set it back a bit. May have been able to shoe this one with 00 by thinning and stretching the toe and the lat branch will stretch a bit when creased properly too.
Did you burn the shoe on?

Thanks Bill. No, I didn't burn, this horse will not tolerate it.
