I would think that steel or aluminum wedged bar shoe would offer a more stable base than the plastic bar wedge. But as far as aligning HPA, providing base for supporting materials, etc. the bar wedge does the job just as well.

Rarely use equipak, to hard to pass the cost on, soft IM will stay under a bar wedge or if you pack the entire foot and use mesh. Like this. Twenty minutes after I had left I got a call, my horse is moving funny he's winging out, too much heel weight for a thin boned TB. Plastic fits into my custom better and I get better feedback from the dressage divas!!!! versus a wedge shoe. But I would still use them if I felt they would be better for the situation at hand. More than likely but who knows, at the end of the day all that matters is the horse being sound enough to do his job.
I have had the best results with full plastic wedge frog support pads for horses who hoof testing shows can tolerate active loading of the frog. More sensitive frogs I go with hard plastic wedge pads without the frog support for passive loading. Really sensitive frogs that wish to be completely unloaded I go with a wedged open shoe or with a rim pad. I very rarely use a bar shoe.
Anything i need to be wedged up we make i have used plenty of plastic wedges in the past and have found the feet do better with the made ones 1 1/2" went into each heel made from 3/4 x 3/8
