what s wrong with the nail holes and shoe shapes

    I hadn't stopped to think about this. Maybe it is the reason I feel the toe nails are too far forward.

    some trainwrecks at the Vet clinics, I work for, will walk off with shoes with 3 nail holes across the toe and heel nails within 3/4" of the end of the shoe. Haven't had a problem, yet.

    Folks

    do you think that the shoe manufacturers just pick nail hole placement arbitrarily ? or maybe there are some farrier consultants who make suggestions?

    I don't know about nail holes but I never quite figured out the Diamond "Frind" pattern shoes. Years ago the late Diamond rep, I forget his name, told me the frind pattern allowed them to put 50lbs of shoes into the smallest possible cardboard box, thereby saving money on packaging. Could have been a joke or something I thought I heard in an alcohol fog.

    I know Diamond had a shoe, inbetween a front and hind so it was easier to shape either way. I never knew there were hinds made until I came to Denmark.

    I got some samples of concave shoes sent to me this week
    at a first glance the quality of steel looks good,
    shape very good, nail holes good pitch and fit
    clip a tad small for me but its not a problem
    price good.
    these are the things I like to see in a machine shoe
    when i come to a horse the less altering on that shoe the better
    turning to hand mades does not mean they are better on less
    they have all mentioned in the machine shoe

    front + hind = frind. unfortunately when Diamond does it, it won't fit either without a lot of work. I believe it was the Genesis of "cowboy" shoeing/fill all the nail holes up & rasp everything that hangs over.

    thank for the clarification.

    i don t remember having much trouble with the compromised(frind) pattern, and i m pretty sure you and i began shoeing round the same time, besides a handmade, i didn t know that there were any other brand sides Diamond until they went on strike in 1976 or 77. Then I found out about Nordic, and Baker etc.. In the early 80 s when Anvil, later to become St Crouix came into existence their original 4 styles, plain, heeled,toe and heel and rim were virtual patterns shapes of Diamond. I m told that Anvil was started by a few former Diamond ex workers.

    Your Diamond man may have been Jack Wrigley. I do remember some good stories that Jack told me about the placement of nail holes, basically said, every farrier,smith,horseshoer always suggested that to be ideal for them the holes should be either,

    moved more towards the toe,

    moved further back from the toe,

    moved in

    or

    moved out,

    other than those few things, they felt it was a workable shoe!

    cept that very few folks round me use Diamonds i d say not much has changed bout consideration of nail holes and shoe shape!

    Actually I found a very good use for Diamond's, get a case, wrap it very good in plastic, tie a rope to it and throw it over board, if it does not hold add a set of nippers! Make sure the rope is tied on good because you might have to pull them in and use them in a pinch:).

    I remember having a discussion with a farrier that had been shoeing over 40 years about that process. He made a good point: You can either shape the foot properly, and then shape the shoe to it, or shape the shoe properly, and then shape the foot to it. Same result. The key word is properly, with either method. It makes me think about it when someone says something like that.
