All jokes aside, what the hell? I don't think there is any possible way this is related to treating laminitis or relieving pain of any kind.

Also looks like it would weaken the hoof wall to the point that it would fall apart like a cheap soup sandwich. At the very least it looks like there will be some hoof wall distortion before this grows out.

Seems to me that someone was way over thinking some hoof problem and thinks this is a solution.
What will probably happen is that the horse will survive in spite of this abuse, and the shoer will market a 'special' drill bit kit with a free how-to DVD and expect to get rich.

Thats crazy how that kinda stuff gets around on social media..my better half come showed me that pic asking what it was or going on...she got it on facebook. .. its nothing to do with lamanitas... this is new bare foot fad..being barefoot they have lost ways for extra traction devices..this is a system used for barefoot trail horses..much like mud grips on tires of 4x4s ..

Actually it is the result of what happens when hoof worms are exposed to nuclear radiation.

Hoof worms... radiation! HOGWASH!!! Everyone knows hoof worms are immune to the effects of radiation. Its far more likely that the colony swarmed and what we are seeing is the wound left after the worms left.

This is the result of the actions of the [often, but not necessarily] white coated hoofpecker , a strange bird who has received 4 or so hours of knowledge of the equine hoof while ensconced in a class at the university, or, someone who has received training from said hoofpecker.

it was probably an experiment that the vet wanted to do....
it's done to weaken the whole hoof wall
Why not sure, and educated guess would be
...to relieve laminitis flare up/ hoof boundness / contracted heels / club foot.

So, please expound on your educated guess as to how that 'experiment', especially in the areas forward of the quarters, would be effective in the treatment of contracted heels or club feet.
