I pay 20% of the take...I start out at 5% if a guy has his head on right and I got him pulling shoe in a week I will allow another week..if we get along and he keeps his trap shut and not talk my head of with silly BS and not to the client I will move him to 10% in about two to three weeks.. he will stay at 10% for a bit until he makes it where I can do more horses if he hangs in there for a bit more I will go to 15%... I top out at twenty ..its worth 5% just to have someone sweep up and chat to....I do think George is WRONG..I don't care what you pay most are to lazy to work my hours no matter what I would pay...I don't ask my guy to do stuff like fix my car or none of that..I'm not a teacher I'm a farrier that needs help.. the only out of the way thing I ask is meet me at my house and wake me up..

Maybe George but in my area a guy making 150 to 175 and 200 on the days we got it like I like it ain't bad money ..if you can pay a guy more than that and he ain't got to buy gas..insurance ..supplys..or field phone calls you would have a truck full..but in my truck the help will get in my back pocket and ride out a 16 hour day ..i by far am not no great shoer so for me being a hack I will out work and out service the next guy day in and day out but I don't wanna hear any crying about going home..we knock off when I say we are done..but I may wanna work for you if you make worth my while and pay 20% of yhe take as long as you don't wanna shoe two head and call it a day...dick fanguy said it best when he said way to many wanna make a living off Shoeing without really doing any work ..so most of ur post is spot on...I hues it comes down to how hard will the farrier you are with will work..I don't pay an hour wage that's for union folks..lol..

I'll pay a guy half when his reputation brings in half the clients, he dose half the scheduleing, buys half the supplies, fuel, truck costs, etc., and teaches me all he knows so we can share that knowledge.

As to calling someone working for a Farrier with out pay "slave labor", diminishes the concept and facts of slavery.

I taught my boys everything I know, and they still don't know anything.
I've also known guys who would work for another guy than run their own business.
My son who's starting his own business, once worked for a guy who he was much better than. Today he's putting on a thrown shoe for me; in light of my previous sentence, that makes me wonder.

In a real trade union apprentices are not paid for training and any expense incurred(travel, etc. ) are paid for by the apprentice. The taxpayers pay the unions to train the apprentices. The apprentices only get paid when they go to work and can only go to work when they have a certain number of hrs. of training. They usually start out around 60% of scale depending on the local, and get a raise every so many hrs. worked, operators I believe was every 1000 hrs, most apps are lucky to work a 1000 hrs a year.

The same goes for journeyman upgrading for different certs or training. You have to take time off of work and attend training classes unpaid.

Except for the part where the slave was kidnapped from his home, chained, taken to a different country, sold, becoming someone's property, worked to maximum endurance, without getting any gain, other than minimal food and shelter, could have any family taken and sold, and had no hope of any of this ever changing as long as he lived.
So yah, pretty much like the guy in the first post.
By the way this stuff still goes on in Africa and Asia.

I'm fairly sure it goes on in the U.S and Europe also Bill although we don't like to think of it, there are woman trafficked all over the world for use as slaves in the sex trade.

I have tried hiring apprentices. They only slow me down. I worked 3 part time jobs and apprenticed for free when I was getting started. I now tell those wanting to learn that I will not pay them they really should pay me. OTOH lots of folks (many who are on this forum) taught me a great deal and permitted me to ride along. To pay it forward anyone is welcome to ride along with me and my dog anytime but PAY YOU? to slow down production? REALLY?

yes and no one seems to care. for they are your sister, mother, aunt, daughter, ect. but no one seems to care about the rights of women. I wish the feminist movement would focus more on that; then other things that can be dealt with legally. especially since in America it's ok to rape now, comments made from the political point of view here lately.

The "plan' i have is to get up and go to work everyday"; as told to Bloomer a few years ago when treid to interject himself into the AFG. "attain new business and make money". If "one' wants to get "on the train to success' get your head out of your ass and get some motivation. if not, get the FK off my train....."
