How do you go about it? What gauge aluminum do you buy, what do you cut it with, etc. or do you use a hard pad?

I always made mine out of 1/8" steel. Shape the shoe to the foot, outline the shoe on the steel, cut it with the torch, drill matching holes (4) in the shoe and plate and tap the shoe for a 5/16 bolt. Bolt the plate to the shoe and grind off any excess bolt on the solar surface of the shoe. Apply the shoe and bolt the plate on and your done.

    Cody,

1/8" ali will do in most cases as will steel .That said ,I've gotten away from both and use hard plastic instead basically because the plastic has some memory,by that this illustration, if with a metal plate the animal steps on something and bends the plate, it might/probably stay bent and maybe put pressure where it is not intended, the memory of plastic returns the plate back to it's position. The aside of plastic is that it can be cut with your nippers, a saw or if you wish to tempt fate a knife and finished with a rasp or sander. no torch needed ! The plastic I use is 3/16" thick and rarely sometimes 1/4". The stuff will out wear al. and about 2/3 the wear of fe.

I won't say where I get it as it might seem like advertising

    Regards

    Ray

Lexan (poly carbonate) works well. You can cut it with a jig saw and it can be heated enough to mold to a rolled toe. and it is transparent for a while till it gets too scratched up.
