most of the time its how confident you are

what gas forge you useing,single or double?

Try and see if you can burn a shoe in it, if you can then it will weld.

are you not reaching welding temp?

I think that's the problem - used to be able to do it in coke, but haven't used a coke forge since I qualified.
I tried when I got the gas forge and quickly gave up. Now I just arc weld the bars, but it feels like cheating...
