David , take a closer look and you will be able to see that the hind foot was dressed on a wednesday at 11.24 , it took 4minutes and 23seconds , by a right handed farrier using a save edge rasp , as i say its all in hoofwall , general observation
im at home running an internet consultancy , some folk are willing to listen and pay for this sort of talk , mainly from overseas who have an overriding addiction to religion , war and mcdonalds
I used to shoe for a guy years ago who's brother had gone out to New York working on the buidings and had ended up shoeing the carriage horses at the time 2005, he was apparently shoeing the majority of the carriage horses, no education just able to nail a shoe on and making good money, I was just finished a very hard four year apprenticeship and hearing that boiled my blood, another over night farrier!
Same here on the track. Was the last person to get a apprenticeship and tested for the track; now anyone can shoe at the track without any learning at all. we have a lot of break-downs like no other country!!!!!!! I just earned a new barn from a self-taught er , young, cocky boy.
I don't really have a strong opinion either way, other than that there are only two ways to shoe a horse; hot or wrong.
Bill if you have only ever shod one horse cold how can you say its wrong you dont have any comparison? Cold makes it harder to do a good job but if done right on helthy feet I see very little difference IMHO
I've lived with the guilt for years. I will agree that a skilled hand can do a fine job cold, but the many little differences that each make it a little bit better, will add up to much better. IMNTBHO.
I think if you dont really know what your at hot shoeing wont save ya i mean how to trim, how to fit, know what section a horse needs, what lenth he neesds ect if you have all these things 1/2 right it might be in its favour I know lads that would blow you away with foot jobs done cold and thats on most type horses
Ya, I have to agree with Bill.....Hot or Wrong. The trim is still the most important factor. Banging on cold steel is a sin is it not ?
I've seen that too John, but could there have been some things a bit better if it was done hot? I heard one the other day that I had heard before;"Guys hot shoe because they can't get a foot flat with a rasp". The person said that to me because they saw me burn a shoe on to a nice flat foot.
Bill, i hope your question about how to send Bill Adams the finger, or whatever it was was answered for you.................. I don t understand ,and never have the hot vs cold relating to correct or incorrect, discussion. To me, either the horse walks off better than it walked/limped up or it doesn t,hot ,cold ,glued, custom, bare or out of the box, if it walks off better or serviceably sound, it was done right, to me the rest is just a way to put others down because they don t do it the way I say I would have. If your way works for you, keep doing it,no matter Regards Ray
do you get many horses limping up to you Ray? So are you saying who ever said its hot or nothing as Bill said is putting someone down?
John, new referrals are often limpers, not all, as to hot or nothing, cold or nothing, barefoot or nothing is in my mind, putting the other practioner down, otherwise , why say it, if you or anyone else shoes a horse" hot" and the horse off goes sound and satisfactory but some one says he should have been set cold, in your mind, would that not be putting the "hot shoer" down? and the reverse if "cold" or bare? a gent was buying some supplies from me a few years ago, and told me this, he was working at a barn, 3 horses, as he was bent over a horse another farrier pulled up and opened up his rig, walked by him without saying a word and looked up the barn owner, they had a few words, walked out with saying anything to the man working and the owner came back to the barn, the visiting farrier, closed up his truck and pulled out of the drive.............. the working farrier could not contain his self and asked the owner "what was that about"? The horse owner replied.........." he said that unless your farrier has a minimum of this amt. of equipment he is not capable of shoeing todays horses"..... To me, that man was ,without saying it, putting the other man down with BS, and it is he same sometimes here and other sites and barns etc. . over the years i ve seen folk knock folk for their equiptment, trucks, lorries, nippers shoe selection etc. . to me that s all rubbish. to me it comes down to how the horse moves and performs.Hot ,cold, buy them on the internet to fit...... don t care, did it suit the horse and the needs. aren t you glad you asked
