Sorry, I don't know Davey Kelly. Is he/she in Dubai?
Sabina there is a lot going on here, He looks aged in his legs and at 17 thats no surprise. The suspensory ligaments in the last lateral views (from the side) look like they are over working. When horses get old when they have worked hard the stay apparatus of the limb can fail in different areas, and other areas take the load. The feet are a symptom of this really, the imbalance between flexor and extensor tendons cause a stance alteration which causes a capsule distortion, the more the capsule distorts the more the limb strains and it becomes a vicious circle. He kind of has a chronic lamitic look about the capsule, the hoof wall looks like its projecting off the the pedal bone inside.
So what should you do about it, the foot needs a bit harder trimming than it is getting in some places and a bit less in others. The heels need easing back till they are more weight beraring and LEVEL!! the sole needs smoothing and cupping a bit, all those lumps of horn cause lack of function and pressure. If the sole is sorted then the frog position will be correct and you can bring the toe back. Dont think that all of this is a problem, some of it is sortable and some of it isnt. I think i need to come to Dubai!!!
Sabina here is one that feet needed a trim in the right places as David mentioned
I'm in Saudi not Dubai, there has to be good farriers down in Dubai though.
Is the horse living out in sand paddocks?
David is in Saudi, Sabina is in the Emirates. Although the countries share a border, David and Sabina are about a thousand kilometres apart. (David might fancy a weekend in Dubai mind... )
David, thanks for your post! I see, actually the firs step in my case will be to smoothen the sole. It is really very bumpy and very uneven. Then heels to be brought back and not left untrimmed with bars turned in.
It would be great to get you to Dubai am sure many owners would love to get a professional farrier.
I do and will be shortly but I'm not planning on working while over there
Sabina, these pictures might help you understand what David (Hall) was saying.
Your horse looks like this
When he should look more like this:
The trimming method that David described will help to improve your horse's angles but it may not be possible to get them perfect.
David, do you know a good farrier in Dubai? Maybe you can recommend one please?
Some horses at some stables (mostly local non-racing Arabians) do spend a lot of time in sand paddocks. In out stable there are grass paddocks and riding arena with very nice ground.
Sabina are ya planning on doing the trimming yourself or am I reading the thread incorrectly? If so that sounds crazy to me! You explained the horse is a TB and has had a history of lameness even with shoes. That is not the type of horse to start trimming with no experience. If I miss understood your posting I apologize.
No sorry unfortunately not.
Gary, once again thank you for the photos, I can see now in comparison that the angels on my horse is not as it should be. Out of your experience - 1. with the age of 17 is it still hopeful to improve? and 2. Without shoeing him it can improve? or shoes would be more preferable?
\ No no, will not do myself! Will just try to talk to farrier.
Yes, his angles can be improved no matter his age.
I think that you could probably continue without him being shod on sand and grass surfaces. If you wanted to ride him out in the wadis he might struggle.
I see. For wadis riding I will put then the hoof boots on him. Anyways we are not going for outside riding that often. Thank you, Gary. Will be talking to my farrier this week. Two main things that I carried out from these replies (thank you all for sharing your opinions!) - the turned in bars must be taken off and the sole has to be smoothened. Will try to get that through to the farrier.
Id just fly me out there. Be easier than telling monsieur that a bunch of guys on the web say you need to do it different
David you have been away all ready
i need to get away to the hot country
I think we had better both go!
Ok you do the fronts and i will do the hinds
They need someone used to shoeing in the searing freakin' heat!
I'll go (how much does a farrier charge in Dubai?)
