Kim,I admire your effort, but I believe that you need a good master. I'm not a master, but I can give you an advice for "write" the map of shoe in your brain: "Practice with old shoes:straighten firstly one branch, then turn him. When you are capable of turn him correctly, straighten all old shoe and turn him again". The apprentices have a problem; they want forge like the masters and they must forge like apprentices. If you try to imitate Smitty or Craig Trnka, you will frustrated. You make the better in your forge level, and then,go to the next step.
I want suggest the lecture of these articles. My Spanish is hard for translate with Google, but you can see the pics and you can imagine the process.

In this another article I explain the "Methode of 5".

Gabino, I let it slide that you posted my rockerbar on your site with some horrible explanation to the mechanics of it but a line might need to be drawn with you giving forging demos.

Yes!!!! Here,at Spain, The Quiet Man is John Wayne. A person very very apreciated. Really,John, when I hear Irish or Ireland, I think about that movie. The garden of your wife looks the Maureen O'Hara home.
